1943WRCAM55582Hawaii 1943. 240 photographs including twenty-seven photo postcards measuring 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 to 8 x 10 inches the majority 2 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches corner- mounted; one certificate. Oblong folio. Textured brown cloth with gilt stamps of American eagle with shield and palm trees on front board "Aloha Hawaii" stamped in black brown cord binding. Presentation inscription on first leaf. Some wear to extremities front hinge just starting to crack. A few photos mildly rumpled but overall extremely well-preserved. Very good. An engaging album depicting an eerily peaceful Hawaii in the days leading up to and during the American participation in World War II in the Pacific. Prepared by Charles Ryan for Viola Suhar inscribed to her and with her address written beneath the Trader Vic's certificate the album begins with Ryan's "Trading License" from Trader Vic's in Honolulu dated October 21 1943. It then proceeds directly to twenty photos of planes at "Hickem" i.e. Hickam Field in Honolulu the principal Army Air Force base in Hawaii during the war. These photos were likely taken before the attack on Pearl Harbor as Hickam sustained substantial damage during that attack. Then follows numerous tourist photos of Hawaii many annotated with location. Included are several photos of "hula girls" surfers shots of downtown Honolulu beaches mountains and landmarks such as Lau Yee Chai Chinese restaurant the Chamberlain House Ka Hale Kamalani Iolani Palace Waikiki Beach and the Aloha Tower. In the midst of this are nine uncaptioned photos apparent reproductions of ships under attack and one of sailors escorting caskets.

Also included are several photos including one handcolored image of sailors relaxing on the beach at Camp Andrews and at "The Breakers" the Navy beach club in Waikiki; sailors at work and doing laundry; and then two sets of photos one set enlarged of a particular sailor with one of him on a motorcycle and the second with his shirt open and tattoos visible which are presumably of Charles Ryan. Finally there are nine photos of the Church of Latter Day Saints Temple in Laie outside of Honolulu including a large 8 x 10 inches image of the entire site. It seems unlikely that Ryan was a Mormon considering the tattoos and the visit to Trader Vic's so perhaps this was simply part of his travels throughout Hawaii. Ryan was almost certainly in the military most likely the Navy but we could not find conclusive evidence of his service. Viola Suhar was a teacher in Perth Amboy New Jersey and likely Charles' sweetheart we did find a Viola Ryan working as a teacher in Perth Amboy in the 1950s.

A carefully-assembled view of a calm Hawaii against the backdrop of war. hardcover books
1935WRCAM52777Various locations in and around Honolulu Oahu Hawaii 1935. Seventy-eight mounted silver gelatin photographs either 3 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches or 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Oblong octavo photograph album paper-covered boards string-bound. Front cover detached covers and spine chipped. Some album pages chipped but photographs remain largely untouched. Very good. An absorbing collection of photographs capturing American military life in Hawaii during the first half of the 20th century with the great majority of the photographs captioned in ink on the album pages. The unnamed photographer and compiler of the photographs apparently served at the Schofield Barracks in Honolulu as he includes several photographs of the base including the "Boxing Bowl." He also records other notable locations around Honolulu including the Waipahu Sugar Mill the Kilaeua Crater Japanese Temple the Mid-Pacific Railway wreck Kapiolani Park the Honolulu railway station Sand Island the naval destroyer JEANNE D'ARC Sampans Haleiwa Bay the Monoa Hotel the Waipahi Sugar Mill Diamondhead and Kahala Bay Waikiki Beach several shots of volcanoes and lava formations and more. He even includes a shot of the pack mule he presumably used in his wanderings. Hawaiian photographs are scarce in the market and continually more desirable especially with holographic notations like those present in this intriguing album. hardcover books

1843WRCAM55894Lahainaluna: Seminary Press 1843. 6pp. 12mo. Original printed self-wrappers. Tiny chip at top of spine tiny area of marginal loss to spine edge of first two leaves minor foxing. Very good. In a cloth chemise and green half morocco and cloth folding case spine gilt. An exceedingly rare early Hawaiian imprint. The work is a supplement to the English translation of KE KUMU KANAWAI A ME NA KANAWAI O KO HAWAII PAE AINA Forbes 1337. It contains ten laws and resolutions approved by Hawaiian King Kamehameha III and the premier Kekauluohi "at the council house at Luaehu Lahaina Maui Sandwich Islands." The laws and resolutions themselves deal with land leases taxes on land and pets the timing of the evening guns divorce whaling public auctions tonnage dues ship clearances the removal of duties on gold and silver exports and the payment of jurors. The laws had to be submitted for approval to the British commission that exercised temporary control over Hawaii between February and July 1843 and it is noted in the penultimate paragraph "All the foregoing laws.will take effect after being communicated to the British Commission and proclaimed at each of the principal islands."

The resolution on "Respecting Divorced Persons" is especially interesting. This resolution allowed among other things all "divorced persons" not just men to remarry if their divorce was granted before the 1840 Constitution was adopted. The 1840 Hawaiian Constitution had placed certain restrictions on remarriage for both divorced men and women. For instance in cases of adultery the guilty party whether a man or a woman was forbidden to remarry while the former partner was alive. An absence of four years whether through criminal confinement or overseas service or some other reason was often grounds for divorce and remarriage for the party who remained in Hawaii. If a husband tried to kill his wife or vice versa the offending party was not allowed to remarry. The present resolution provided for all those who divorced before the 1840 Constitution to remarry no matter the reason for the divorce.

The resolution regarding whaling ships is also notable. It allows whalers to barter or sell up to $200 worth of goods duty free "for the purpose of procuring refreshments." If a whaling ship barters or sells more than the $200 threshhold "they shall pay the customary duties." This is likely a reaction to laws or regulations set down in other Pacific ports during the golden age of the whaling industry when Hawaii was an important port of call for ships of all nations. "The edition is unknown. This is not recorded in reports of either the 1843 or 1844 General Meetings. Because of its small size it was doubtless part of the category 'small jobs ship lists government protests &c.' in the 1844 minutes" - Forbes.

Forbes lists no references for the work and the location of only eight copies all in Hawaii. OCLC lists a digital record in twelve libraries which may contain some number of authentic copies and three additional copies in a separate record which appear to be the 1913 reprint by the Statute Law Book Company printed in an edition of fifty copies according to Forbes.

An uncommon and elusive early Hawaiian legal work that touches upon women's issues and the whaling industry at the height of its prominence in the world economy. The second album shows vacation scenes in Cape Cod Harwichport; Boothbay Harbor Maine; Squirrel Island; Monhegan Island; Wicasset Maine; Montreal Quebec; Berkshires; Bretton Woods; Delaware Water Gap; Washington D.C.

Most interesting is an 8 x 10 in photo in the first album of the first aviation meet in Hawaii showing "Bud Mars in a Curtis aero-plane" performing for an awestruck crowd in December of 1910. Hawaii was the first stop on a 30000 mile demonstration tour sponsored by the Curtis Aircraft Company the Wright Brothers' chief rival.
Undoubtedly a unique image - we found no published images of this meet. The rest of the albums are interesting in their own right showing the life of a well-off Hawaiian family over the course of 10 years. unknown books
