- THE RARE FIRST STATE - Plan map, with some large buildings in bird's-eye view. Text on tablet at lower right, with coats of arms of Rome and its rioni. Oriented with east at top. Relief conveyed pictorially. Reduced copy of Falda's small plan of Rome, published 1667. See Huelsen. This example of the map is taken from the very rare Coronelli's Citta, Fortezze e, Isole, e Porti principali dell'Europa in Pianta et in Elevatione, Descritte, e Publicate Ad uso dell'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti dal Padre Maestro Coronelli Lettore, e Cosmografo della Serenissima Republica di Venezia, printed in Venice by Domenico Padovani in 1689. Coronelli lived a period of extraordinary editorial fecundity starting from 1689, when he had the chair of geography at the University at the Procuratie, with the publication, in 1690, of the first volume of the Atlante Veneto. Under the name of Atlante Veneto goes the entire collection of thirteen works composed over the next decade, from the Isolario to the Specchio del mare. Copperplate, with full margins, very good condition. Very rare. Rarissima. A very rare map of Rome, unknown by mostly of the repertoiries. The view depicts the city as it was at the end of the 15th century, drawing on the same prototype commonly indicated in the panorama of Mantua in turn taken from a still unknown panorama engraved in the workshop of Francesco Rosselli around 1485.Work taken from the very rare "Plantz, pourtraitz et descriptions de plusieurs villes et forteresses, tant de l'Europe, Asie, & Afrique, que des Indes, & terres neuves: Leurs fondations, antiquitez, & manieres de vivre: Avec plusieurs cartes generales & particulieres, servans à la Cosmographie, iointes à leurs declarations: deux tables fort amples, l'une des chapitres, & l'autre des matieres contenues en ce present livre. Le tout mis par ordre, region par region, par Antoine du Pinets" printed in Lyon by Jean d’Ogerolles. The work include 55 woodcuts, many after Munster, comprising 3 double-page maps (cordiform world after Apianus, Europe and Germany), 7 half-page maps, 18 double-page views (including Lyon, Bordeaux, Geneva, Frankfurt, Florence, Venice, Rome, Constantinople, Jerusalem, Cusco and others), and 27 illustrations (including Mexico city). The view is inspired to Guillame Guéroult’s "Premier livre des figures et portraitz des villes", published in 1552 by Balthazar Arnouellet. From him, d’Ogerolles bought many plates, therefore we can state that this block had been already used many years before and has then undergone some changes before being reprinted. Woodcut, in excellent condition.
Very rare map of Rome with vertical projection, oriented with the north at the top.First edition of the work, published in Paris by Jean Lattré and based on the map by Giovan Battista Nolli (1748).The title written in French is on the right of the engraving and at the bottom, after the dedication to Monsignor Antoine Eleonor Leon, the date 1788. The coloring added manually allows to distinguish the antiquities and architectural emergencies campite in red, the churches campite in blue and represented in plan with the only exceptions of St. Peter and Castel Sant'Angelo campite in yellow. The lots built are outlined with a thin pink perimeter line. At the bottom right there is a description in French and on the right a legend of 170 numbers. The present map was reprinted in 1801 by the publisher Jean (see Scaccia Scarafoni n. 247 and Marigliani p. 296).The only known exemplar in the public collections is that of the Vatican Library, while the reprint of 1801 is that of the collection of the Biblioteca Nazionale of Rome.Etching, fine original colouring, small restorations in the lateral margins, otherwise excellent condition. 1410 x 1755 mm. Grenzkolorierte Kupferstichkarte in 9 Blättern, Maßstab ca. 1:900.000.

76. Map of Rome, engraved and published by Merian. It was first issued in the Itinerario Italie of Martin Zeiller. The map is a reduction of the big map realized by Antonio Tempesta in 1593. "Contained not only in the 1640 work of Martin Zeiler but also in the work of Werdenhaen, De Rebus publicis Hanseaticis, pl. 173 - Frankfurt 1641. It is certainly the best known and most widespread reduction of the map of Antonio Tempesta. It does not present any update with respect to the its prototype and therefore depicts the city in the year 1593, although it was engraved over half a century later. A curious correction with respect to Tempesta concerns the Pyramid, which he erroneously depicted inside the walls, is instead drawn here more correctly astride themselves "(see Marigliani p. 175). Engraving printed on two sheets, joined up vertically, with fine later hand colour, in very good condition. Magnificent example of one of the most beautiful and highly decorative representations of the city. Bibliografia A. P. Frutaz, "Le piante di Roma", CXXXV, tav. 275; Hulsen 88, Scaccia Scarafoni 186; C. Marigliani, "Le Piante di Roma delle collezioni private", tav. 76.
A massive Japanese commercial reference from the early 1900s. Approximately 2,000 pages. Text primarily in Japanese, other than the 18-page bilingual (Japanese/English) index and an intriguing bilingual fold-out sample of various contemporary export documents. Two items laid inside front board include a double-sided bilingual glossary of commonly used trade terms and a wonderful 22" wide by 16" high colour map of the world with trade routes to/from Japan indicated in red. Most text on the map is Japanese with some place names in both English and Japanese. Please note that library name is stamped through the blank upper right corner of the map. Elaborately gilt-decorated backstrip with title in Japanese and English bears considerable wear but is still handsome and, dare we say, mysterious. Per a handwritten inscription inside back board, this copy was presented to representatives of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo on 24 October, 1908 by Mr. Shonojo Moriyama, Proprietor of the Dobun_____. Edges adorned with partially-faded marbling. Usual library markings. Above-average wear. Binding intact. A marvelously unique item. Book
Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1561. Esemplare in meravigliosa coloritura coeva. ORIGINAL COLOURINGEtching with engraving, about 1561. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, with margins, in perfect condition. Example in wonderful contemporary coloring.Map, taken from Ruscelli edition of Ptolemy's "Geographia", printed in Venice from 1561 to 1598. Ruscelli's Atlas is an expanded edition of Gastaldi's "Geografia" of 1548, which has been called the most comprehensive atlas produced between Martin Waldseemüller's Geographiae of 1513, and the Abraham Ortelius Theatrum of 1570. Ruscelli and Gastaldi's maps were beautifully engraved on copper, marking a turning point in the history of cartography. From that point forward, the majority of cartographic works used this medium. As it was a harder material than wood it gave the engraver the ability to render more detail. Gastaldi sought the most up-to-date geographical information available, making the modern maps in Ruscelli's Geographia among the best modern maps of the period. The maps are engraved by the Sanuto borthers.Only their enormous diffusion prevents a sustained evaluation in the antique market. The work in fact had a first issue in 1561, printed by Vincenzo Valgrisi who also edited the reprint of 1562. There are three editions signed by Giordano Ziletti (two in 1564 and one in 1574), while in 1597 it was edited by the Calignani brothers. All these editions contain 64 engraved maps. In 1598 and 1599 the two editions edited by Giuseppe Rosaccio and printed by the heirs of Melchior Sessa come to light. These last two editions include 69 plates; in fact the map of the planisphere and of the continents of Rosaccio are added.Only their ubiquity prevents an assessment supported in the antique market.
The Mundi Mirabilis oeconomia was influenced by Kircher’s Mundus Subterraneus (1665). The Jesuit scholar, Athanasius Kircher, was one of the first compilers of semi-scientific knowledge about the physical features of the world. This map expounds on Kircher's theories by noting the abysses and the currents they create as well as the locations of the world's known volcanoes. Between the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Caspian Sea, and the Persian Gulf, Kircher theorized massive tunnels and a complex interchange of water flows. These tunnels are noted most particularly between the Black and Caspian Sea and between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf. Antarctica is shown along the southern part of the map. In the North a great open northwest passage is depicted running all the way across the map. Shows New Guinea and a suggestion of Australia attached to the 'Australsis Incognita' mainland. Africa is shown with considerably greater accuracy than many maps drawn hundreds of years later – particularly with regard to Niger and Nile River Systems. North America and South America are both wildly malformed, indicating a relatively sketchy knowledge of the continent. Korea is shown as an Island and Japan appears as only a single island. He attended Humboldt University of Berlin. He studied history, philology, and geography. He published his first geographical work, with Carl Ritter, in 1840, titled Atlas von Hellas und den hellenischen Kolonien. The atlas focused on ancient Greece. In 1848 his Historisch-geographischer Atlas der alten Welt was published. In 1854, his atlas, Atlas antiquus was released. It was translated into five languages. Neuer Handatlas über alle Teile der Erde was first published in 1855. In 1877 his Lehrbuch der alten Geographie was published, and in 1879 Leitfaden der alten Geographie, which was translated into English (A Manual of Ancient Geography, 1881) and into French. In 1894 he created the first part of a larger atlas of the ancient world titled Formae orbis antiqui. He traveled to Asia Minor four times between 1841 and 1848. Marigliani p. 175). Plan of Rome, engraved and published by Merian. 175).Engraving printed on two sheets, joined up vertically, perfectly repaired tear, geberally in very good condition. Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650) Swiss engraver native of Basel, worked in Frankfurt where he was able to work in the workshop founded by Theodor de Bry. Merian distinguished himself, so much so that he married Maria Magdalena de Bry, daughter of Johann Theodore de Bry, and from about 1625 he took over the company, giving it a considerable increase and dealing in particular with the development of topography and travel books. The Kaspar sons and above all the renowned Matthaeus the younger also worked in the Merian typography, who after the death of their father continued with unchanged success the management of the business which continued until 1727. In 1638 Merian printed the Neuwe Archontologia cosmica, das ist, Beschreibung aller Kaÿserthumben, Königreichen und Republicken der gantzen Welt works on the description of the World already published ten years earlier with a modest look that Merian revolutionized by enriching it with 98 tables, some of which are double sheets. The Archontologia went through four other editions up to 1695 with text either in Latin or in German, not homogeneous in terms of the number and type of engravings inserted. In 1640 Itinerarium Italiæ Nov-antiquæ written by Martin Zeiller was published, reprinted in 1688 with the title Topographiæ Italiæ. Acquaforte e bulino, 1756 circa, firmata in lastra in basso a destra. Etching with engraving, 1756, signed at the bottom margin. From the Antichità Romane, first edition by the French publisher Bouchard and Gravier in 1756. A great impression, printed with brown ink on contemporary laid, strong, paper, with margins, perfect conditions. The first edition of this work, in four volumes, was published in Rome in 1756 at the printing-works of Angelo Rotili at the Massimo alle Colonne Palace, by Bouchard and Gravier, book-dealers and tradesmen located in Rome near the church of St. Marcel at the Via del Corso. This collection included a portrait of Piranesi, engraved by Felice Porziani, and a dedication to James Caulfield, count of Charlemont. This dedication was later abolished in the aftermath of a quarrel, described by Piranesi in his Lettere di Giustificazione [Letters of Justification] (1757), which also gave rise to three different versions of this first original edition (May 1756). These different versions are distinguishable from the title-page of the first volume, which initially was dedicated to the Irish aristocrat, then exhibited a cancelled dedication and coat of arms and, finally, bore a Latin motto written by the artist "Aevo Suo Posteri set Utilitari Publicae". Henry Focillon, in his 1918 treatise, presumed that Piranesi prepared and engraved the plates for this collection between 1750 and 1756, although some architectural features could have a few of them dating back to 1746. Actually, the oldest plates included in this collection probably date back even further, as suggested by the extraordinary complexity of this work, due to a prolonged phase of preparation and research, together with the stylistic alterations which can be observed by comparing the different plates. The magnificence of Piranesi's Antichità Romane, however, is not only in the artist's large graphic output. Indeed, this work is of primary importance from the standpoint of methodological innovation within the framework of contemporary archaeology, with the utilisation of texts which are of essential importance for the comprehension of the author's ideas and of the innovations implied in Piranesi's methodology. It can be asserted, as correctly emphasised by Focillon, that the Venetian architect founded modern archaeology. However, this new-fashioned approach implied an important disassociation and a significant deviation from the convictions and the official and academic culture of the time, which was of Anglo-Saxon derivation. This gave rise to a serious controversy, whose target was Piranesi, and to an adverse anecdotal literature concerning his person, the objective being the re-establishment of the endangered authority of the culture it was threatening. The main motivation behind the Antichità Romane was the documentation and preservation, utilising illustrations, of a heritage of ancient monuments which was being ravaged on a daily basis. This approach was incompatible with the one held by amateurs and antiquarians who only took pleasure from aesthetic contemplation and would not refrain from occasionally removing rather imposing parts from ancient relics for their private collections or, more simply, as souvenirs. The main new feature in his procedure was to unify into a single space the acts of excavating, surveying, structural inquiries and measurement together with the analysis of literary sources, the latter of which he examined for himself. This step of unification is characterised by the study of topography which, together with surveying techniques, the knowledge of antique procedures and materials, excavations and on-site inspections, gave rise to archaeology, in other words to the study of ancient h... In basso a sinistra è scritto Ant. Rara. It is based on the large wall map by Giovan Battista Falda, but shows with particular care the urban interventions under the pontificate of Pope Innocenzo XII, including the sea customs house at Ripa Grande (1694). The map also contains a number of interesting notes and the names of the villas and vineyards within the city walls. It includes an elegant cartouche with title and coat of arms at the top, and a second cartouche with a long list identifying 464 places of interest in the Eternal City. The map is oriented north-east at the top and includes ancient and modern sites. Built-up lots are dotted and the names of many streets are indicated. The general layout and various details indicate that this map derives from Falda's great map, to which Barbey however made numerous updates. In fact, the new interventions of Innocent XII are shown, including the sea customs house at Ripa Grande (1694). The map also contains a series of interesting notes and the names of the villas and vineyards within the city walls. At lower left is written Ant. Barbey Sculp. and on the right Domenico de Rossi [...] the year 1697 the 25th of May. Under the title at the top there is the dedication to Monsignor Ranuccio Pallavicino Governor of this great City and Vice Camerlengo. On both sides a legend with 464 reference numbers and a list of the XIV districts, and, at the bottom right, the index of the churches of Rome (cf. Marigliani p. 253). "Stampata in quattro fogli. Engraved by Filippo Troiani for the publisher Tommaso Cuccioni. On the left heading: Indice de' principali edifizi di Roma moderna. On the right: Indice degli avanzi de' monumenti antichi posti nelle loro Regioni. Printed in four sheets. At the bottom news that mentions the name of Pope Gregory XVI (1830-1846), hence the dating to about 1840. In its accurate representation of the city Troiani certainly held to reference the map by Census edited a decade earlier but still current. At the top left dedication to Agostino Feoli, general administrator of the Banca Romana (see Marigliani, 2007, pp. 346-347).
Prima edizione in tedesco dello Schonsperger. Fantastic view of the city placed in the lower part of the sheet that also contains the descriptive text, taken from the "Liber cronicarum cum figuris et umaginibus ab initio mudi usus mit temporis", the very rare "pocket edition" of the famous chronicle of the world, published in Ausburg by Johann Schonsperger, in 1496. First German edition of the Schonsperger. He shortened both the text and the format of the Schedel to produce an edition that was more manageable and marketable than that of A. Koberger. "In 1469 an edition of the Chronicle of Nuremberg was produced in reduced format by J. Schonsperger in which the images are reduced copies of the original ones and also the texts are synthesized. This edition (the second one in German) is however much rarer than the first one. The publisher Schonsperger is known because he used in Nuremberg a new gothic character called Fraktur in the poem composed for the death of Maximilian I" (see Marigliani p. 117).Woodcut, with fine later hand colour, excellent condition.
