Rare perspective view of the city seen from Monte Mario. The panroama is taken from the view engraved by Dominique Barriere in 1649, to which it is in counterpart. At the top, above the title, we see the coat of arms SPQR surmounted by a crown. At the bottom left 12 lines of text and at the right a 42-number legend. Only St. Peter's is recognisable (not even Castel Sant'Angelo is recognisable) from which we deduce that the view was copied and not made from life; this is confirmed by the representation in counterpart. The prototype from which it is taken is the view engraved by Dominique Barriere in 1649, with which, moreover, the numbers and items in the legend also coincide. De Jonghe had already made a very faithful derivation of Barriere's view in 1665, and it is likely that Dankerts drew on it (cf. Marigliani p. 211). Engraving on copper, in a good state of preservation. Not listed in the main repertories.

This unusual polar projection depicts the entire world except the South Pole. California is shown as an island and there is a suggestion of a Northwest Passage via Hudson Bay. There is a distorted portion of Australia noted as Nova Hollandia. The map has delightful depictions of birds and wind heads in the heavens as well as fish and monsters swimming the seas. The beautiful cartouche is filled with animals and two small astronomical diagrams flank the map. Heinrich Scherer, professor of mathematics at Munich, was a devout Jesuit whose work emphasized the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The important, large river systems are exceptionally well illustrated. Many placenames are included in the interior as well as on the coasts. Heinrich Scherer was a devout Jesuit, and professor of mathematics at Munich. This world map was published in Atlante Novissimo, and the world now shown in Mercator projection. Climate zones shown in left margin. Right margin shows Degrees of Climate, Length of Day, Length of Night, and Northern/Southern Climates. Map from the Atlante novissimo, illustrato ed accresciuto sulle osservazioni e scoperte fatte dai più celebri e più recenti geografi. Printed in four volumes by Antonio Zatta between 1779 and 1785. Atlas among the most beautiful and complete ever published in Italy in the eighteenth century, the most famous work of Zatta. The Atlante Novissimo, as also specified in the title, is “increased on the observations made by the most famous and most recent geographers”. Among the most significant innovations there is the appearance of the new islands discovered in the Pacific Ocean by James Cook and the first Italian map of New Zealand. The illustrations were designed and drawn by his collaborators Giovanni Marco Pitteri, Anton Friedrich Busching, Pietro Antonio Novelli and engraved by Giuliano Zuliani. The first volume of the atlas is introduced by a brief essay of general geography where the author defines in a concise and precise way the elements that make up the ecliptic and equatorial grids used in the tables. Interesting is the section where he pauses to describe the phenomenon of precession of the equinoxes and the cyclical variation of the obliquity of the ecliptic. Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, contemporary outline coloring, in good condition.

Scarce first state of Jansson's map of the Ancient British Isles as seen during the third and fourth centuries.. Includes decorative cartouche, sea monstersa and 7 sailing vessels. Roman place names as well as Hadrian's Wall and the Wall of Pius appear on the map, identifying the era represented. Engraved by Peter Van Den Keere. Prepared by A.Ortelius. Ortelius divides the entire island into Britannia Maior (present day England, Wales and Cornwall) and Britannia Minor (present day Scotland). Joannes Janssonius (Arnhem, 1588-1664), son of the Arnhem publisher Jan Janssen, married Elisabeth Hondius, daughter of Jodocus Hondius, in Amsterdam in 1612. After his marriage, he settled down in this town as a bookseller and publisher of cartographic material. In 1618 he established himself in Amsterdam next door to Blaeu’s book shop. He entered into serious competition with Willem Jansz. Blaeu.. His activities not only concerned the publication of atlases and books, but also of single maps and an extensive book trade with branches in Frankfurt, Danzig, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Koningsbergen, Geneva, and Lyon. In 1631 he began publishing atlases together with Henricus Hondius. In the early 1640s Henricus Hondius left the atlas publishing business completely to Janssonius. Competition with Joan Blaeu, Willem’s son and successor, in atlas production prompted Janssonius to enlarge his Atlas Novus finally into a work of six volumes, into which a sea atlas and an atlas of the Old World were inserted. After the death of Joannes Janssonius, the shop and publishing firm were continued by the heirs under the direction of Johannes van Waesbergen (c. 1616-1681), son-in-law of Joannes Janssonius. The copperplates from Janssonius’s atlases were afterwards sold to Schenk and Valck.
In basso a destra dedica a Sir. Bouchier Wrey.
