Inked ownership of Miss Ann Willcox on top of preface pages and elsewhere. Bookplate of Redmond Conyngham in both volumes. Redmond Conygham (1781-1846) was born in Philadelphia. He inherited from his paternal grandfather an estate in the county Donegal, Ireland, yielding L2,000 a year, and subsequently spent some time in Ireland. During his stay abroad he became intimate with Curran, Grattan, and other prominent Irishmen, including his cousin, William Conyngham Plunket, afterward lord-chancellor of Ireland. On his return to the U.S. he settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and was active in state and local politics. He then removed to Lancaster County, where he devoted much of his leisure to antiquarian research. Issued as a limited edition, less than 500 copies were printed. Folding engraved map printed on fine ivory linen, size: 21 x 28 ins (approx. 53.0 x 71.0 cms) folding in 36 panels to 6 x 3 ins (approx. 15.o x 7.5 cms), printed surface very lightly browned (rather more heavily so along central fold), a few locations marked with red ink ; original green cloth slip-case framed in blind and lettered in black 'Flexible Map of London' with deckled thumb-hole, a very good, bright copy. Pianta tratta dalla monumentale opera di Felix Benoist Rome dans sa grandeur. Vues, monument ancient et modernes stampata a Parigi in 3 volumi, da Henri Charpentier, nel 1870. La pubblicazione, illustrata da 100 litografie, fu preceduta da una campagna di disegni preparatori, a far data dal 1864 sino al 1869, eseguita soprattutto da Félix Benoist e in parte da Philippe Benoist. Alla vigilia del Concilio Ecumenico Vaticano I, l’11 agosto 1869, Pio IX decretava la realizzazione di una Esposizione romana delle opere d’ogni arte eseguite per il culto cattolico, che venne inaugurata, il 17 febbraio 1870, nel chiostro della Certosa di Santa Maria degli Angeli. In quell’occasione, vennero presentati i tre volumi in folio Rome dans sa grandeur. I volumi, rilegati in modo sfarzoso, con impresso al centro in oro, lo stemma di Pio IX, sono suddivisi in tre sezioni. Il primo volume tratta di Roma antica, il secondo, di Roma cristiana, ed il terzo, dei monumenti e le realizzazioni della Roma moderna. Una visione preziosa della Roma papale alla vigilia della profonda trasformazione di Roma in capitale dell’Italia unita. Un documento che evidenzia la notevole impronta lasciata da Pio IX nella Città Eterna. L’opera rappresenta il capolavoro dell’artista francese, dove ogni veduta è realizzata in litografia tinta, processo ottenuto usando un diverso numero di pietre. Il risultato è un’opera di grande effetto, tanto da porre il Benoist tra la schiera dei più grandi artisti di interni e vedute del suo tempo. The publication, illustrated by 100 lithographs, was preceded by a campaign of preparatory drawings, from 1864 to 1869, executed mainly by Felix Benoist and partly by Philippe Benoist. On the eve of the First Vatican Ecumenical Council, August 11, 1869, Pius IX decreed the creation of the Esposizione romana delle opere d’ogni arte eseguite per il culto cattolico (a Roman Exhibition of the works of art created for Catholic worship), which was inaugurated on February 17, 1870, in the cloister of the Charterhouse of Santa Maria degli Angeli. On that occasion, the three volumes in folio Rome dans sa grandeur were presented. The volumes, magnificently bound, with the coat of arms of Pius IX stamped in gold in the center, are divided into three sections. The first volume deals with ancient Rome, the second with “Christian” Rome, and the third with the monuments and achievements of modern Rome. A precious vision of papal Rome on the eve of the profound transformation of Rome into the capital of united Italy. A document that highlights the remarkable imprint left by Pius IX in the Eternal City. The work represents the masterpiece of the French artist, where each view is made in tinted lithography, a process achieved by using a different number of stones. The result is a work of great effect, so much so as to place Benoist among the ranks of the greatest artists of interiors and views of his time. L'opera era una sorta di enciclopedia che conteneva notizie sulle varie località del mondo disposte in ordine alfabetico, arricchita da mappe e vedute di tutto il mondo che appartengono a celebri raccolte cartografiche del passato – Bertelli, Valegio, Camocio, Bonifacio, Nelli, Magini e altri – del quale probabilmente l’editore Cadorin era in possesso delle matrici originali. Acquaforte, testo latino nella parte superiore, inferiore e sul verso del foglio, dove sono presenti anche tre figure con abiti dell'epoca, in ottimo stato di conservazione. This example is taken from the work Universus terrarum orbis scriptorum calamo delineatus ... qui de Europae, Asiae, Africae, & Americae regnis, provinciis, populis, civitatibus.... published in Padua in 1713, at Matteo Cadorin, by Raffaello Savonarola, under the pseudonym of Lasor a Varea (or Varela). The work was a kind of encyclopedia containing news about the various localities of the world arranged in alphabetical order, enriched with maps and views of the whole world belonging to famous cartographic collections of the past-Bertelli, Valegio, Camocio, Bonifacio, Nelli, Magini, and others-of which the publisher Cadorin probably possessed the original plates. Delisle war der erste, der eine wissenschaftlich vergleichende Geographie anbahnte, indem er bei seinen Werken auch Reiseberichte und die Werke von Naturforschern benutzte. Er gab zahlreiche Landkarten heraus, die sich durch Eleganz und Schärfe von den früheren Karten unterschieden. - Der breite weiße Rand wurde zeitgenössisch eigens aufmontiert, vermutlich wegen der enormen Blattgröße. Pianta a proiezione obliqua della città tratta da "Itinerario, overo nova descrittione de' viaggi principali d'Italia […] di Francesco Scoto" edito a Venezia da Pietro Brigonci nel 1665. "Piazza Navona è posta in bella evidenza con l'obelisco trovata nel Circo di Massenzio e fatto innalzare durante il pontificato di Innocenzo X al centro della fontana dei Fiumi del Bernini, inaugurata nel 1651, ma evidentemente già in corso di realizzazione nel 1650. Manca invece la chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone (1652/57) e il colonnato di San Pietro (1656/57)" [cfr. Marigliani p. 209]. Le tavole pubblicate da Brigonci sono riconoscibili dal formato quadrato delle stampe.La sua prima edizione dell'Itinerario d'Italia fu nel 1665 ed aveva il testo ripreso dalla pubblicazione del Cadorin del 1659 la quale ampliava il racconto al Friuli, alla Sicilia, a Malta, al Lazio e alla Terrasanta, quindi nello stesso anno in una ristampa inseriva anche delle tavole su questi territori.Nel 1670, 1673, 1676 e 1679 si collocano le altre edizioni del Brigonci, tutte veneziane, tutte col titolo immutato "Itinerario, overo nova descrittione de' viaggi principali d'Italia […] di Francesco Scoto", tutte arricchite da poco meno di quaranta stampe antiche con vedute di città.Incisione in rame, in buono stato di conservazione. An oblique projection map of the city taken from "Itinerario, overo nova descrittione de' viaggi principali d'Italia [...] di Francesco Scoto" published in Venice by Pietro Brigonci in 1665. "Piazza Navona is prominently displayed with the obelisk found in the Circus of Maxentius and erected during the pontificate of Innocent X at the centre of Bernini's Fountain of the Rivers, inaugurated in 1651, but evidently already under construction in 1650. The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone (1652/57) and the colonnade of St. Peter's (1656/57) are instead missing'. [cf. Marigliani p. 209]. The plates published by Brigonci can be recognised by the square format of the prints. His first edition of the Itinerary of Italy was in 1665 and had the text taken from Cadorin's publication of 1659, which extended the story to Friuli, Sicily, Malta, Latium and the Holy Land, and in the same year a reprint also included plates on these territories. In 1670, 1673, 1676 and 1679 there were other editions by Brigonci, all Venetian, all with the unchanged title "Itinerario, overo nova descrittione de' viaggi principali d'Italia [...] di Francesco Scoto", all enriched with just under forty antique prints with views of cities. Carta storico-geografica tratta dal Recueil de cartes sur la géographie ancienne et moderne, à l'usage des élèves de l'Ecole Royale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, stampatp a Parigi e pubblicato in varie edizioni tra il 1806 e il 1825. Charles François Delamarche (1740 – 1817) è stato un geografo e cartografo francese. Fu uno dei più importanti geografi e cartografi francesi della seconda metà del Settecento. Successore di Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), Robert de Vaugondy (1686-1766) e Rigobert Bonne (1727-1794), ne ristampò gli atlanti. Si dedicò all'insegnamento della geografia. Tra le sue opere, oltre alle carte e ai globi, va ricordato un trattato sull'uso della sfera, dei globi celesti e dei terrestri (Traité de la sphère et de l'usage des globes, 1790), in cui egli illustra, oltre al sistema tolemaico, anche quello copernicano, enumerando inoltre tutte le costellazioni antiche e moderne. Suo figlio Félix ne continuò l'opera. Charles François Delamarche acquisì la collezione di Didier Robert de Vaugondy nel 1778, dopo aver collaborato con lui nell'edizione di diversi atlanti. Charles-François Delamarche (August 1740 – 31 October 1817) was a French geographer and mapmaker. One of the most important French geographers and mapmakers of the second half of the eighteenth century. Successor to Nicolas Sanson (1600 – 1667), Robert de Vaugondy (1686 – 1766), and Rigobert Bonne (1727 – 1794), whose atlases he reprinted. Also taught geography. In addition to maps and globes, his works include a treatise on the use of the sphere and celestial and terrestrial globes. In the treatise, he illustrates both the Ptolemaic and Copernican systems, as well as listing all the ancient and modern constellations. His son Félix Delamarche continued his work. Charles François Delamarche acquired Didier Robert de Vaugondy's collection in 1778, after having collaborated with him in the edition of atlases.
