Ojos en la Casa de Meche nace a partir del proceso de construcción de la casa de Meche que desarrollamos en Ensusitio oficina de arquitectura formada por Mtr Arq. Enrique Villacís docente por más de quince años de la FADA-PUCE siete de los cuales ha dictado el taller de diseño arquitectónico de vida real Con Lo Que Hay; y las arquitectas Lorena Rodríguez y Cynthia Ayarza todas ex alumnos de la FADA-PUCE. Este libro nace del análisis y la distancia a la reconstrucción inmediata sucedida a partir del terremoto del 16 de Abril de 2016 junto a un socio estratégico: la empresa privada Pacari Chocolates empresa de chocolate orgánico fundada por Carla Barbotó y Santiago Peralta trabaja en conjunto con cada persona involucrada en todos sus procesos innovación constante responsabilidad social sostenibilidad y el comercio directo con los agricultores de pequeña escala siempre buscando los mejores ingredientes producidos en Ecuador. Nuestro criterio como arquitectos post terremoto fue cauto. Esperamos hasta después de los rescates y evaluaciones para poder analizar y estudiar cómo se puede aportar responsablemente desde nuestra trinchera. Cualquier acción prematura podría resultar como resultó en muchos casos en tener entusiastas damnificados. Sin embargo al segundo día Pacari organizó una campaña de entrega de filtros de agua a los cacaoteros de la zona afectada un proceso que ya tenía encaminado desde antes del terremoto pero dadas las circunstancias se hizo emergente y se lo amplió a los sectores más afectados del sector a donde no llegaba aún la ayuda. A partir del trabajo que realizamos con Pacari en la Cabaña del Cacao en Santa Rita nos contactan para liderar un equipo de voluntarios para distribuir estos filtros. Empezamos con capacitación del uso de los filtros que Waterbearers distribuye para así poder compartir este conocimiento instalar y poder evaluar su necesidad. También contamos con la inducción psicológica antes de ir a la zona de desastre. Al cuarto día del terremoto ya nos encontrábamos en territorio. El primer recorrido de dos días por la zona de Chone lo hicimos junto a los Cacaoteros. Tuvimos la oportunidad de distribuir más filtros que recogimos en Bahía de Caráquez y así regresar por la costa desde Bahía hasta Pedernales entregando filtros en campamentos organizados y en algunos casos cocinas comunales. Este primer recorrido desemboca en una breve evaluación de los problemas constructivos que causaron el desplome de edificaciones y breves asesorías in-situ de las áreas donde difícilmente llegaría apoyo del gobierno. Una segunda jornada la realizamos al mes del terremoto en el área del cantón Atacames y del cantón Muisne con los cacaoteros de las asociaciones de APROCA y APROCAM. Dos días de recorrido tierra adentro. El último recorrido lo realizamos con el administrador de APROCAM Don Olmedito con quien recorrimos el área del cantón Muisne llegando al recinto de 10 de Agosto en Pedro Carbo Esmeraldas donde nos encontramos con un campamento improvisado. Aquí conocimos a Meche sus hijas y nietos y el lugar donde estuvo su vivienda. Un descubrimiento importante que hicimos fue que en las zonas urbanas el apoyo gubernamental y privado estaba llegando y en las zonas rurales los pobladores estaban de alguna manera preparados para mantener sus viviendas puesto que en el campo la reconstrucción y ampliación es constante. Sin embargo el sector suburbano adyacente a las ciudades ni urbano ni rural era el más desfavorecido por su informalidad y dependencia con la ciudad y en muchos de los casos el escaso conocimiento sobre construcción; este era el caso de Pedro Carbo.
