Vol II - v pp390 complete with10 b/w plates 1 fold-out. Both volumes bound in half vellum over marbled boards with paper title labels to spine bindings in good condition with some marking to vellum some rubbing to boards and edges and loss to parts of title labels. Inside both volumes bookplate of H. Martin Mowll Baron Henry Martyn Mowll of the Cinque Ports to front pastedowns. There is smatterings of foxing throughout books worse at the beginning and end of volumes with Vol II slightly cleaner. The fold out plates are Foxed with some transfer. A reasonable tightly bound set with an interesting provenance and extra biography of author. A bit of chipping to the cloth at the spine ends and along the front joint. Underlying boards peeking through at the corners. Contemporary owner's name address and blindstamp on the verso of the front free endpaper. By a Scottish Latter-day Saint. Just before embarking for America Lyon published the first volume of poems ever issued by a member of the Church under the title of "The Harp of Zion." The book was donated to the Perpetual Emigration Fund and thousands of copies were printed and sold. The Perpetual Emigration Fund was set up to help any saints who wanted to migrate to Utah. One is a "reward of Merit" for Sunday School. The inscription below this is to Paul S. Richards. Errata slip tipped to the rear. Publisher's forest green cloth with a decorative design and horizontal stripes stamped in blind on both covers and spine titled in gilt. Spine and edges toned spine and textblock at the spine base spotted modest wear at corners and spine ends bottom edge with a faint stain affecting only a few leaves with a tiny marginal tidemark very good and sound. Mormon poetry by a Scottish poet with all benefits going to the LDS perpetual emigrating fund. Dedicated to apostle F.D. Richards the book contains a poem about the author by apostle John Taylor as well as poems titled "The Press" "The Prophet" "Reflections on a Bank Note" songs and hymns and poems written to various Mormon notables. According to Supporting Saints: Life Stories of Nineteenth-Century Mormons The Harp of Zion was first the complete edition of poetry published by the Mormon church as well as their first venture into the realm of creative literature. Lyon's anti-evolutionary text ' Homo versus Darwin'. It constitutes the very first publication in Japanese to reject Darwin's theory. A year after the publication the book was banned for 'corrupting public morals'.The present work is Lyon's reply to the publication of Darwin's The Descent of Man. Here he sees Darwin being charged by Homo of denying him from being a creature made by a God and declaring man to be merely some kind of animal. The author is recorded as being 'Eisa Gurei' Asa Gray but in 1986 a study confirmed the text to be a translation of Lyon's work.'Saru no Saiban' is an important work in the history of the reception of Darwinism in Japan. Darwin's theories had a profound influence on Japan and Japanese culture but in a slightly different way than in the West: Darwinism was marked as social and political principles primarily embraced by social thinkers philosophers and politicians to advocate the superiority of Japanese culture and society and military and not by biologists and zoologists.
