Second edition 12mo engraved folding map short tear and engraved folding plate small marginal stain to pages 10 & 11 not affecting text occasional light browning contemporary calf slightly rubbed head of spine worn a very good copy.
travel2023 The material of the work comes from Giraud the French Consul in Athens and from the Capuchin monks settled there judiciously mixed with scholarly accounts by Meurs and others. The work was highly regarded for many years although Spon had made it quite clear that neither Guillet nor his brother as he had claimed had been to the city. In fact even Laborde remarks that Guillet had an 'intelligence remarquable des choses de l'antiquite.' His account did contain information on the contemporary state of the city and he very much emphasised the need to compare the ancient and modern cultures Blackmer.
Blackmer 766.
