19666717New York: Pantheon Books Bollingen Foundation Collection 1966. Bilingual Edition Bollingen Series LXXXII. Hardcover. pp. 71. Oblong 4to. measuring 11" x 14" 28 x 36 cm. Publisher's original tan cloth over boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Four striking illustrated colour plates by noted French painter draughtsman and printmaker Georges Braques especially reproduced for this book. No detectable flaws: extremities and contents without blemish with firm sound binding; fine and housed in original price-clipped dustjacket now housed in protective mylar cover. Lacking the original slipcase. Near fine. Translation of: L'ordre des oiseaux. Text in English and French. <br/><br/>"When Georges Braque was preparing a series of etchings of birds to be published on the occasion of his eightieth birthday it was learned that St.-John Perse had just completed a poem on the theme of birds. The poet agreed to permit the first publication in the limited edition L'Ordre des Oiseaux with twelve original etchings by Braque. The four reproduced in this book were inspired directly by the poem. Among his last works these etchings mark a change from the static forms in Braque's earlier plates to a more dynamic conception. Perse on his part added to his text several pages of aesthetic meditation referring mainly to the metamorphic vision of the painter and to Braque's birds in general. Braque who with Picasso created cubism and carried it to noble poetic heights embodied in the four plates he created for Perse a generalized sense of power flight grace and space. The poet moves in his text from a particular observation of the flight of birds to reflections on the significance of their movement through space and its impact on man's consciousness. He uses the birds of Braque by relating the process of changing form in flight to the changing form of an etching as the artist carries it through its several states. Robert Fitzgerald poet and Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory at Harvard University translated St.-John Perse's Chronique and three lyric plays by Paul Valery published in Bollingen Series." Saint-John Perse was the pseudonym of Alexis Leger 1887–1975 a French poet writer and diplomat who stands as one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. Perse was dismissed from his post by the Vichy government in 1940 stripped of his French nationality and forced into exile in the United States. After producing some early work he then focussed on his diplomatic career. This was his first work on his return to poetry. Perse's work was admired by literary contemporaries such as Paul Claudel André Gide and André Breton who viewed him as a "surrealist at a distance." Particularly interesting for the English reader is the relationship Perse had with T.S. Eliot. .

Secretary of state then English Minister of Foreign Affairs Lord Bolingbroke was an influential statesman who experienced both notoriety and disgrace. He pursued a literary career alongside his political activities beginning by contributing to the writing of the journal The examiner against the Whig party. The 2 volumes gather the author's philosophical works which would have a lasting influence on philosophers such as Pope or Voltaire or even Mirabeau. His philosophy is inherited from Locke and the author shows himself in his writings to be anti-clerical and anti-religious but deist. In the second volume we find a historical work on the state of Europe before the Treaty of Utrecht of which Bolingbroke was one of the architects. Bookplate: Bibliothèque de Belay. S. n. hardcover

St. John who as a young man was fascinated with Borneo and the adventures of Sir James Brooke rajah of Sarawak and took up the study of the Malay language was introduced to Brooke on his visit to England in 1847 and accompanied him as private secretary when Brooke was appointed British commissioner and governor of Labuan. Thenceforth St. John and Brooke were closely associated. St. John was with Brooke during his final operations in 1849 against Malay pirates and he accompanied Brooke to Brunei the Sulu archipelago and to Siam in 1850. Although St. John deemed some of his chief's dealings with the natives high-handed and ill-advised he in a letter to Gladstone defended Brooke against attack in the House of Commons. While the official inquiry into Brooke's conduct which the home government appointed was in progress at Singapore St. John acted temporarily as commissioner for Brooke 1851-5 and visited the north-western coast of Borneo and the north-eastern shore ascending the principal rivers. Appointed in 1856 British consul-general at Brunei St. John explored the country round the capital and penetrated farther into the interior than any previous traveller. He published his full and accurate journals supplemented by other visitors' testimonies in these well-written and beautifully illustrated volumes entitled Life in the Forests of the Far East 1862. DNB Included are chapters on the Sea and Land Dayaks and their social life the Samarahan River and the Caves of Sirih St. John's ascents of the Mountain of Kina Balu explorations in the interior to the south and south-east of the capital expedition up the Limbang River visits to the Sulu Islands Borneo proper Sarawak the Chinese in Borneo the Chinese insurrection and Roman catholic and protestant missions.
