Secretary of state then English Minister of Foreign Affairs Lord Bolingbroke was an influential statesman who experienced both notoriety and disgrace. He pursued a literary career alongside his political activities beginning by contributing to the writing of the journal The examiner against the Whig party. The 2 volumes gather the author's philosophical works which would have a lasting influence on philosophers such as Pope or Voltaire or even Mirabeau. His philosophy is inherited from Locke and the author shows himself in his writings to be anti-clerical and anti-religious but deist. In the second volume we find a historical work on the state of Europe before the Treaty of Utrecht of which Bolingbroke was one of the architects. Bookplate: Bibliothèque de Belay. S. n. hardcover

Henrietta Knight Lady Luxborough 1699-1756 was banished by her husband Robert Knight to his estate at Barrells Hall Warwickshire upon suspicion of infidelity. Once there she set to work on restoring the neglected estate and created an early and celebrated ferme orné on the grounds. During her years at Barrells Lady Luxborough became part of the literary circle known as the Warwickshire Coterie at whose center was the poet and landscape artist William Shenstone to whom the present letters are addressed. Luxborough is credited with having invented the word 'shrubbery' - its first recorded appearance is here in her letter to Shenstone dated October 16 1748 p. 56. J. Dodsley hardcover

Henry St John 1678-1751 was an English politician government official and political philosopher. He was a leader of the Tories and supported the Church of England politically despite his anti-religious views and opposition to theology. Bolingbroke was a major influence on Voltaire and on the American patriots John Adams Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Adams said that he had read all of Bolingbroke's works at least five times; indeed Bolingbroke's works were widely read in the American colonies where they helped provide the foundation for the emerging nation's devotion to republicanism. His vision of history as cycles of birth growth decline and death of a republic was influential in the colonies; as was his contention on liberty: that one is "free not from the law but by the law."
