To Elisha Morton of Oxford Gentlemen Greeting: You having been elected Lieutenant of the B Company of Light Infantry in the first Regiment of the first Brigade and Sixth Division of the Militia of this State to take rank from the eighth day of July A. D. one thousand eight hundred and forty two. Reposing special trust and confidence in your ability courage and good conduct I do by these presents in the name of the State Commission you accordingly. You will therefore with honor and fidelity discharge the duties of said office according to the Laws of this State and to Military Rule and Discipline. And all inferior Officers and Soldiers are hereby commander to obey you in your said capacity; and you will yourself observe and follow such Orders and Instructions as you shall from time to time receive from the Commander-in-Chief or others your superior Officers. Given under my Hand and the Seal of the State the twelfth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forth two; and in the sixty-seventh year of the Independence of the United States of America. By the Governor Hand signed by John Fairfield in addition hand signed by the Secretary of State Philip C. Johnson and hand signed by the Adjutant General Alfred Redington. Registered Volume 5 No. 4370. The document has been folded once vertically and three times horizonally. The paper document has large brown spots in the upper right hand and lower left hand corners. Smaller brown spots are present elsewhere. The Seal of the State of Maine is in the upper right hand corner. On the reverse side of the document is the signature of Lieut. Elisha Morton. In addition on the reverse side of the document is that day's equivalent of an appearance before a notary public and taking the oaths required by the Constitution of this State. This document has been in my possession since the 1940's. It was acquired from Forrest L. Morton who had no children to pass it on to. About 15 or so years ago this document was taken to a book-binder preserver and a fee of around $100.00 was paid to further preserve the paper document. It would need to be shipped in a round tubed container. I do not at this time have the ability to put out pictures. A few chips to initial leaves of one issue otherwise internally very good. A significant run nine of fourteen total issues with two additional supplements of a periodical for Civil War veterans of the First Maine Cavalry. "Published four times a year and will contain the proceedings of the yearly reunions of the First Maine Cavalry matters of historic value to the regiment and items of personal interest to all the members." The volunteer cavalry regiment served with the Army of the Potomac for the duration of the war and participated in many of the critical battles including Brandy Station the largest cavalry engagement of the entire Civil War. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States begun in Philadelphia in 1865 was modeled on the Society of the Cincinnati and formed to protect the republic amid rumors of a plot to destroy the government after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Among its members were Presidents Ulysses S. Grant Rutherford B. Hayes Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley. By 1899 it had over 8000 members which included nearly every officer of note. This volume contains 155 Maine circulars 22-179 for the years 1881 to 1901 Contains circulars meeting notices black bordered "In Memoriam" notices biographies of the deceased.
