The Committee urges Maine "to send forth from our state an unequivocal voice in favor of the Head of the National Government" by voting for Adams supporters Enoch Lincoln Governor Stephen Longfellow Congress and other members of the State ticket.<br/> Allusions to the bitter 1824 presidential contest are numerous; the wounds inflicted by that campaign are obviously still open: "We have placed the man of our choice at the head of our government." If "we abandon him to the rude tempest of a bitter opposition how shall we answer it to our consciences and our country. What then has the President done that we should leave him to his enemies. A Parliamentary printing of documents relating to the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 negotiated principally by Daniel Webster and Lord Ashburton which resolved several boundary disputes between the United States and Canada. Foremost it determined the border between Maine and New Brunswick which had been the subject of growing local confrontations known informally as the Aroostook War. The treaty also agreed on crimes for which extradition was possible and notably neglected to include flight from slavery on that list. The documents contain correspondence between Webster and Asburton on both of those subjects as well as several letters discussing the Caroline affair in which a group of agitators for Canadian independence attacked an American steamboat on the Niagara River and sent it ablaze over the Falls in 1837. Interesting merchant's letter written during the War of 1812 while under British occupation requesting an accounting based on an unpaid invoice in part: ".shipped on board the Schooner Eagle.twenty jugs of the extract of the bark of Angostura which I consigned to the House of Mssrs. Anth Merchants in Havana.which has arrived out.but I have not received any remittance on account of it yet. My orders were for them to sell it and remit the proceeds in molasses and sugar." Two-inch closed tear at the right margin; otherwise very good.<br/><br/> It's possible that this letter is not from a disgruntled merchant but from a smuggler who has been cheated. Smuggling and Piracy as well as the pursuit of Prizes of War the capturing of another nation's vessel and cargo for profit were commonplace during the War of 1812.<br/><br/> unknown books
