Sir Henry Sumner Maine born in 1822 was a British historian and comparative jurist. In a morocco binding with gilt detailing. Externally smart with just some slight rubbing to the extremities and some fading to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just some scattered instances of foxing. 189554270Boston MA: F.N. Atwood c. 1895 1898. One colour lithograph reverse mounted on glass sized 8 x 13 in. fitted with brass chain frame and hanger possibly used as chimney flue cover minor edgewear to glass minor soiling to chain very minor spotting dustsoiling still an excellent piece w/ bright strong image. The USS Maine ACR-1 was launched in 1895 and was an armored cruiser together with her near-sister ship USS Texas with two gun turrets staggered en echelon rather than on the centerline with fore gun sponsoned out on the starboard side of the ship. As she took seven years to build she was out of date upon launching. She sailed with the North Atlantic Squadron operating from Norfolkd along the East Coast and the Caribbean. Feb. 15 1898 an explosion obliterated the forward third of the ship killing 260 sailors and the Spanish-American War began in April 1898 two months later. Atwood b. 1844 was a Massachusetts nautical maritime painter who operated studios in Boston and Maine and painted the original for Brigadier General H.A. Wheeler in 1895 and in 1898 the colour print was issued as a patriotic souvenir. Victorian flue covers were used after the chimney flues were removed in 19th-century homes following Winter and often served as an advertising giveaway. F.N. Atwood, unknown

Very good. - Over 55 words penned on 10-1/2 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide "State of Maine / Office of the Governor" stationery with the state's crest embossed in gilt & blue at top left. In his brief letter Governor Curtis thanks Brenda Kuhn the daughter of the artist Walt Kuhn for her recommending Joe Hoyt Sr. for appointment as York County Commissioner "Please be assured he will receive every consideration for this position". He concludes with Christmas & New Year's wishes. Signed "Ken Curtis". Folded for mailing the top left corner is creased with a nearly invisible tear below the top fold at left. There are rust stains from a paper clip framing the embossed crest at top left. Very good together with a retained copy of Brenda Kuhn's letter.</p><p>The American attorney politician and diplomat Kenneth Merwin Curtis born 1931 served as the 68th Governor of Maine from 1967 to 1975. He served as Jimmy Carter's U.S. Ambassador to Canada from 1979 to 1981.</p> Augusta, Maine, December 13, 1973.
