Tante storie che contengono una morale semplice, facilmente intuibile, nuda come in fondo è la prosa scelta, giustamente, da Giuseppe per non aggiungere orpelli e sovrastrutture narrative alla immediatezza della favola: dal Delfino pescato dai "poco amici" del pescatore Cònero, alla misteriosa Fossa di un diavolo, a Fano, chissà perché impegnato a non far recuperare un tesoro, di una nave greca, ai tanti che lo bramano. Sino a quelle usanze tra il sacro ed il profano, quando la notte di San Giovanni era di tutto e di più, l'ideale per le streghe ma anche per capire il futuro, per togliere il malocchio, per continuare a credere e narrare di una divinità che abita nella stanza accanto e che interviene nelle piccole cose quotidiane. In questa religiosità fatta di ingenue emozioni, di condizionamenti pagani, dove diavolo, uomo nero, folletti, fate e streghe popolano stabilmente le fantasie di grandi e piccoli, con incroci tra animali che pur abitando mari, boschi e colline della regione sembrano usciti tutti dalla penna di Fedro, l'autore non perde mai la rotta giusta, la leggerezza disincantata di una narrazione essenziale e da cronista "che non giudica".
