Il y accumule au fil du temps un bric-à-brac fabuleux, un cabinet de curiosité dont seul un mur à été reconstitué au Centre Pompidou. Dans En lisant en écrivant (Corti, 1980), Julien Gracq en fait une belle description : "Les deux pièces, décalées en hauteur par un court escalier, même par les jours de soleil et malgré les hauts vitrages d’atelier, m’ont toujours paru sombres. La tonalité générale, vert sombre et brun chocolat, est celle des très anciens musées de province – plus qu’au trésor d’un collectionneur, le fouillis impossible à dépoussiérer complètement (…) fait songer à première vue (…) à la fois à un cabinet de naturaliste et à la réserve, en désordre, d’un musée d’ethnographie. Le foisonnement des objets d’art cramponnés de partout aux murs a rétréci peu à peu l’espace disponible".

Both programs were very successful and earned Sothern four Emmy Award nominations but a bout of hepatitis had left her with a bloated and overweight appearance and she preferred not to be seen. Born Harriette Arlene Lake in Valley City North Dakota Sothern left home very young and began her film career as an extra in silent films in 1927 aged 18. In a role at MGM originally intended for Jean Harlow Sothern was cast as "Maisie" a bold brassy but somewhat scatter-brained showgirl who was also an amateur detective.
