254 pages including glossary. Based upon interviews with Arne Johnson, Hjalmar Bergren, John McCuish, George Grafton, Edna Brown, and others who helped organize a woodworker's union in British Columbia. This work was begun in 1957 with the intent of recording a history of the woodworker's union in the Lake Cowichan area, of which so many oft-repeated tales have been heard. Intended to embrace only the camps and mills in the area, it grew to be a larger story, until the author was faced with a mountain of data on paper ad tape, and the necessity to draw a line. For this reason, the story is based on the Cowichan region, appropriately enough, since it was one of the vital areas in the establishment of the woodworker's union. 150 pages. Abstract as follows: "The vegetation of the Vernon map sheet area is diverse in response to variation in climate and site conditions. The diversity of the plant cover is characterized by vegetation types. The vegetation of the area is characterized by two Regions: the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. Within each region, patterns of zones (climactic climax potential) and subzones (successional patterns) are recognized. A standard reconnaissance vegetation survey was implemented and 290 vegetation plots were located. Computer analysis of the plots resulted in the identification of forty-five vegetation types, representing seral and climax vegetation in the Dry Interior and Interior Wet Belt Regions. For each type the relationships between environmental characteristics and vegetation were assessed. The evaluation of these relationships is important for the application of the vegetation information to resource management. Interpretations of each vegetation type are made for wildlife, forestry and recreation values. The interpretations provide information which can be used to assess relative values of vegetation for different users." Average wear. Unmarked. Minor sticker residue upon illustrated front cover. 281 pages. Future historians may well agree that Martin Exeter led one of the great lives of the twentieth century. He shaped circumstance through the transcendance of the ordinary human condition. At the age of 21 he left the life of the British aristocracy and moved to the Cariboo region of British Columbia where he honed the strength of character that would eventually make him a source of inspiration to thousands of people worldwide. He founded the town of 100 Mile House B.C. and went on to lead a body of people known as the Emissaries to what could be called today an unprecedented force for the spiritual restoration of the planet. In this tribute to a city he loves, author provides both a history and a character study, describing Glasgow at different moments in time: the medieval city; the eighteenth-century expansion; the mid-Victorian heyday; the Edwardian sunset; the Depression of the 1930s; post-war decline; the renaissance of the 1980s. Examines the economic function of the city at each of these periods, drawing attention to characteristic architecture and to representative individuals, posing questions about the relation of Glasgow to the rest of Scotland, and exploring the paradox that Europe's City of Culture should have owed its wealth to its trade with the New World, and should be arguably the easternmost American city.
