Davy is credited with discovering chlorine and iodine and for isolating for the first-time potassium sodium calcium strontium barium magnesium and boron. As befit a well-rounded man of his day Ayrton describes him: "His mind was as vigorous as it was original and no less logical and precise as it was daring and comprehensive; nothing was too mighty for its grasp nothing too minute for its observation; like the trunk of the elephant it could tear up the oak of the forest or gently pluck the acorn from its branch" p.14. While the prose at times can border on the hagiographic the reports of Davy's discoveries and his personal and professional relationships with the great men of his age make for fascinating reading. The nickname "Pom Pom" refers to Georges Pompidou the then Prime Minister and top aid to President Charles de Gaulle. The term "chienlit" was brought to notoriety by de Gaulle in an angry speech during the student protests when he used the vernacular term as a scatological pun "La reforme oui la che-en-lit non" meaning "Reform yes but chaos no." Subsequently the students reused the expression on leaflets and posters where silhouettes of political leaders were accompanied by confrontational slogans.

np unknown books

The present texts document the plans for reconstructing it after the ascension of Louis XVI who unlike his father favored renovation rather than demolition of the existing structure. The architect Bernard Poyet was supervisor of works in the city of Paris. He proposed a new façade based on Rome's Colosseum. The design was composed of a series of pavilions converging towards a center like the spokes of a wheel merging at the hub. His plan was rejected in favor of a more utilitarian design. The fair included a reconstruction of the Bastille and its surrounding neighborhood but with the interior courtyard covered with a blue ceiling decorated with fleur-de-lys and used as a ball room and gathering place.

The main symbol of the Fair was the Eiffel Tower which served as the entrance arch to the Fair. Since the lifts had not been completed when the Exposition opened the first visitors had to walk up to the second floor platform. Workers had worked through the night the day before the exhibition opened to complete the necessary construction needed to safely allow patrons to set foot upon the structure. When speaking of the dedicated workers M. Salles the son-in-law of Eiffel made the statement that "no soldier on the battle field deserved better mention than these humble toilers who will never go down in history. unknown books
