Profusely illustrated throughout primarily from industrial photographs. Some very minor wear and soiling along edges. Small folio. A wonderfully designed well-illustrated and beautifully printed booklet detailing the history of Société JOB. The company was founded by Perpigman pharmacist Jean Bardou in 1838 who first branded his products "J.B." with the letters separated by a diamond. This booklet was issued upon the occasion of the company's 100th anniversary and the text within proclaims ".and the soul of the French craftsman reveals itself at every turn in this far-seeing industrial organization." A regional printing of the official French proclamation of "bonne ferme stable & solide" peace between France and Great Britain bringing an end to the war of the American Revolution and warfare in other colonies and Europe. Although a preliminary peace had been negotiated in Paris as of Nov. 30 1782 with an armistice in effect as of Jan. 20 1783 the final treaty took many more months to conclude both because of last minute wrangling over fishing rights on the Grand Banks and delays in Trans-Atlantic ratification. The final treaties between France England and the United States were originally proclaimed on Nov. 3 1783 and this version of the announcement was printed at Caen on Dec. 27 1783. As a Channel port the notice of peace would have been of particular interest there. hardcover books

For a fascinating account of this catalogue and sale which caused traffic jams along Pall Mall see Arthur Rau's "Bibliotheca Parisina" in The Book Collector Autumn 1969 pp. 307-17. Amongst the buyers at this sale were Lord Spencer Douce Woodhull Cracherode and the Duke of Newcastle. Thanks to the recent researches of Milton McC. Gatch "The Bibliotheca Parisina" in The Library Seventh Series Vol. 12 Number 2 June 2011 pp. 90-118 we finally know the identity of the consignor: Antoine Marie Pâris d'Illins 1746-1809 a military man who was forced to emigrate in 1792 because of conflicts with the Revolution. Rehabilitated by Napoleon Pâris d'Illins died as a general of the infantry during the Spanish campaigns at Cocana in 1809. See the entire article to learn more about the collector his library Edwards's additions etc. We know that not all the books came from the one library; there were books from Loménie de Brienne masquerading under another provenance probably for political reasons and Aldines which Edwards must have obtained in Italy. 4694Rare Photography Advertising Broadside for a Parisian photography studio operated by Allophones Lionel who was active in the 1860s according to Getty Images. Lionel advertises a guarantee that no photographer had offered: a proof - "epreuve" - of the image before the photograph is printed and if the client does not like the image the photographer will take a second photograph and offer a second proof for no additional charge. <br/><br/>A caricature of the famed French photographer Nadar appears to sit on a camera in the broadside's highly decorative design. The sheet measures 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches and is normally aged with slight chip in upper left corner else very good condition. Photographs of individuals in the carte-de-vi site style established in the 1850's became more popular in the 1860's with many photographers competing for clients. This richly designed broadside must have appealed to new customers. We have not found another example of this broadside. unknown books

On January 20 1783 terms for a general armistice between England and France and Spain were reached two months after terms with the United States had been worked out. A general armistice was agreed upon for February 4. This supplement to the ROYAL GAZETTE was probably the first publication of the terms of the British-French agreement. The French advantage after Yorktown had been largely lost with De Grasse's defeat in the Caribbean in 1782 so the net effect was largely a return to status quo with Caribbean possessions of both sides restored. Furthermore England's claims to Newfoundland were maintained and mutual fishing rights off the Canadian coast were agreed upon. DAVENPORT 169. hardcover books
