Exhibition of Paalens new fumage a technique for generating evocative patterns with the smoke and soot of a lit candle paintings which made his reputation as a painter. Paalen joined the surrealist movement in 1935 and developed a deep freindship with Breton. This exhibition was held in the same year as the famous international surrealist exhibition that had been held in Jan. 1938.
