201627975Lanham:: Rowman & Littlefield 2016. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight unread copy in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. Mary McAuliffe traces a decade that saw seismic change on almost every front from art and architecture to music literature fashion entertainment transportation and most notably behavior. The epicenter of all this creativity as well as of the era’s good times was Montparnasse where impoverished artists and writers found colleagues and cafés and tourists discovered the Paris of their dreams. Major figures on the Paris scene—such as Gertrude Stein Jean Cocteau Picasso Stravinsky Diaghilev and Proust—continued to hold sway while others now came to prominence—including Ernest Hemingway Coco Chanel Cole Porter and Josephine Baker as well as André Citroën Le Corbusier Man Ray Sylvia Beach James Joyce and the irrepressible Kiki of Montparnasse. Les Années folles also saw an undercurrent of despair as well as the rise of ruthless organizations of the extreme right aimed at annihilating whatever threatened tradition and order—a struggle that would escalate in the years ahead. 198628712Austin:: University of Texas 1986. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket with touch of rubbing to the extremities. This important study investigates a little-known aspect of 20th-century literary history. Benstock describes the lives and work of approximately two dozen English and American women who lived in Paris during its heyday as a literary center. Though many of these women made significant contributions both to Parisian expatriate culture and to modern literature they have long been overshadowed by the reputations of their male relatives and colleagues. By examining the lives and work of such diverse figures as Gertrude Stein and Caresse Crosby Edith Wharton and Djuna Barnes Benstock attempts to establish what it was like to be both a woman and a writer in literary Paris at the time. Album 270 x 210 mm 10¾ x 8¼ in; 49 silver gelatin photographs with locations in ink on verso map in pen and ink; brown textured covers with title in ink on upper side black plastic spine bar.
The night of May 10-11 1968 known as The Night of the Barricades was marked by fierce clashes between student protesters and police in the area around the Sorbonne. After police blocked protesters from reaching the ORTF Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française students began tearing up cobblestones and building barricades. Around 2am on May 11 police launched a charge and a violent confrontation continued until dawn. Nearly 500 students were arrested and hundreds more were hospitalised including 250 police officers. Far from quelling support the clashes deepened public sympathy for the students. What had started as a university-led movement for educational reform soon spread to engulf all of France.

The photographs in this album show the aftermath of the night's events with the hand drawn map showing the areas around the Sorbonne centred on rue Gay Lussac with symbols showing the location of the barricades and burnt-out cars.
[Paris], [1968]. unknown

197626004
New York:: Pantheon 1976. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Near Fine dust jacket with just a touch of edge wear. The Secret Paris of the '30s is one of the most evocative photographic memoirs ever published. For years it was known that Brassai had taken a series of 'secret photographs' which could not be published because of their daring nature. Alone or in the company of friends he discovered the forbidden Paris of the 1930s - its brothels whores pimps and opium dens - the sordid yet bewitching bas-monde where high society mingled with the underworld. Brassai's photographs reveal a milieu previously known only through books such as the novels of Henry Miller a frequent companion on his nocturnal rambles: the seamy grimy yet infinitely exciting reality that tourists still think of when they seek 'Paris by night'. These fascinating images are accompanied by Brassai's own text in which he describes the extraordinary conditions under which he took his photographs.
Pantheon, hardcover

Most concern the publication of certain books the relationship of the Faculty with several guilds and the rules concerning the autopsy of corpses. The book opens with the university reform of 1600 which added many classical authors to the curriculum. For the Faculty of Medicine this meant the official establishment of Galen as the primary authority on botanical medicines. Interest in the work of Galen was highly stimulated by new translations from the Greek that had appeared in the 16th century and by 1600 the Paris Faculty was heavily mired in the doctrines of Galen which would remain so up until the 18th century. With a few contemporary annotations and corrections. Paper somewhat browned and with a few spots. A small corner of p. 11 of the index is cut out. Pp. 17-44 of the final part appear to be missing but this seems to be the case in every edition of this text we have located. Binding worn at the extremities with the head and foot of the spine damaged and a crack in the back hinge. A good copy.l Krivatsy 12063. unknown

About very good in publisher's grayish boards with paper spine labels with some spotting and staining particularly to vol. II tear to the foot of vol. I spine boards & spines rubbed particularly to head & foot contents clean. Cruikshank George ill. Intended for children and originally composed for the author's family this three-volume work about science was first published in 1827. Originally published anonymously in later editions authorship was credited to Paris. Dedicated to the writer Maria Edgeworth it aims "to blend amusement with instruction" which Paris states Edgeworth has "satisfactorily demonstrated" in her own novels. Topics covered in volume 1 include momentum geometry elasticity and rotatory motion demonstrated using a yo-yo a jack-in-the-box and a slingshot among other toys and games. A fascinating work in science education the work seeks to prove "how profitably and agreeably the machinery of fiction may be worked for the dissemination of truth." Additionally this work is a part of the Cruikshank canon as he contributed several woodcuts.

8vo. 3 vols. Cohn 599 for first the edition. Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley unknown
