Ex-library with library stamp to each plate but with no other markings. Consists of two uniformly bound volumes containing 480 full-page plates with captions mostly hand-coloured and taken from various 19th century fashion journals/magazines. Volume I has 230 plates Vol. II with 250 plates. No text. The dates range from 1804 to the 1860's and have been arranged in chronological order. 111030567PHILADELPHIA: PORTER & COATES Book. Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Burgundy hardcover set with paper spine title and chocolate endpapers. The copyright dates for this four-volume set are 1875 1876 1883 and 1888. Fair to good minus condition due to the covers with nice text blocks and clean pages. Some with several fold-outs. The rear cover on volume I is present and detached. And along with volume I the inner joints on volume II are heavily cracked at the gutter edge. Volume III has an outer two-inch crack at the top front spine edge. Volume IV appears to be in the best shape overall with a light surface crack at the front cover. The covers are soiled with corner tip bumps rubbing and/or light scratches. Art Club of Philadelphia Library bookplate at the front pastedown inside cover with a tiny black crest showing it was incorporated in 1887. It denoted that this set was numbers 5-8 on Case R-2. Fair to good minus condition with nice clean pages and secure text blocks. About 9-3/4 x 6-1/4 with 640 774 965 and 681 pages. Rare!. PORTER & COATES Hardcover

Murray's anthology of French tales; first editions in uniform charming half calf bindings. Two first editions. First and second series each volume very scarce and rarely seen on the market. Containing a series of essays and sketches of France by Eustace C.G. Murray illegitimate son of Richard Grenville second Duke of Buckingham & Chandos. Eustace Murray was an anti-establishment English journalist; he moved to France to avoid a perjury charge where he became well known as the "Comte de Rethel d'Aragon". He authored several novels and short satirical pieces essays and sketches for the English and American press. From the library of Egerton Parker with his pictorial bookplates to front pastedowns. Rebound in half calf with five raised bands gilt tooling to spine titles in gilt to morocco spine labels. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only back strip faded. Internally firmly bound.
