"Two little acts of Justice: one yto John Palmer who I am told has twice tried to enlist and was turned down for eyes but the other 'shirkers' stand; one to one: I thought and thought about my fatal phrase which did not sound quite right on the phone and yet was familiar: : what I said was 'I'd rather be cut than shot for a cause I don't believe in'- " He imagines how good it would be when the fighting is over "dividon and pain". "But I am anxious for things are not going well at Verdun the Germans may take it by instalemnts within five or six weeks and then if they burst through between Soissons and my old fear Berry au Bac . hardly anything will escape the pincers same model as use against the Russians. The one chance is that they have worn themselves out by dint of victory." An obituary states: "He served in the French army and during the war was section officer to the British Ministry of Munitions. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. In the Foreword the author states that ". As much skill and science and understanding of art is needed in the adornment of the inside of a palace as is required in the designing and embellishment of t he outside" William Francklyn Paris was a professional architect who studied with private tutors at the Art Students League in New York and in London Paris and Rome. He served as United States director of decorative art at the Paris Exposition in 1900. Paris did architectural decorative work in the State Capitols of Missouri Minnesota and West Virginia as well as for numerous universities. From 1901 he worked with his own firm Paris & Wiley Associates in New York. In 1922 Paris was named Chévalier de la Légion d'Honneur and immediately set about founding the American Society of the French Legion of Honor. He went on to act as its treasurer vice president and in 1946 as its president. Paris died at age 83 in New York in 1954 survived by his widow Mrs. Margaret Wynne-Jones a son Francklyn Wynne Paris and a brother Dr. Auguste Jean Paris. In the publisher's original full cloth binding with a cloth dust wrapper. Externally very smart slight bumping to the tail of the spine otherwise very minor wear. Dust wrapper has some bumping to the head of the spine but is otherwise in excellent condition with slight wear and the occasional mark only.
