18303220258
Hand-coloured etched concertina-folding peepshow with four cut-out sections and three loose cut-outs; front-face measuring 118 × 145 mm this a little spotted and rubbed; extends by paper bellows to approximately 500 mm; modern slip-case; therefore no title label.

The front-face consists of a view of the Arc de Triomphe. This is separated from us by a wooden fence. On our side of the fence soldiers with their horses relax. The large peephole is in the arch of the monument. Peeping through it we look down the Champs Elysées towards the Place de la Concorde which is shown on the back-board. The Obélisque has yet to be installed there so the scene precedes 1836. On the cut-out sections civilians and military await the military procession which seems to be forming up in the distance. The military on the second cut-out stand to attention and a solitary soldier on the third section presents arms; otherwise everyone seems relaxed.
Hall [?] ainé, Editeur, Suceur. de Atin. The actual peepshow consists of the view from a point just East of the Basin Rond looking down to avenue towards the Basin Octagonal and then beyond across the Place de la Concorde and up the Champs Elysées to the Arc de Triomphe. The Obélisque which arrived in Paris in 1833 and was erected in Oct. 1836 is not yet shown in position in the Place de la Concorde. The small peep-holes provide views of avenues used by pedestrians. Engravings drawn by Admiral Paris.

The circumnavigation by Admiral Paris in the 'Artémis' took place between 1837 and 1840. The engravings from the original drawings after Laplace and others include a wonderful view of Manila a picturesque Honolulu a chillingly grim view of the penal colony at Port Arthur Van Diemen's Land /Tasmania; and the 'Artémis' run aground at Papeete Tahiti; The introductory text by Henricy places each engraving in the context of the route taken by the 'Artémis' which visited Sydney as well as Hobart. A luxurious large paper reissue of the finely engraved illustrations originally published in the Laplace edition of 1841. Forbes writes: "This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid of Edmond Paris who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text. It has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few collections of Pacific voyages". Condition: cleaned large paper wide margins very good condition.
