"Two little acts of Justice: one yto John Palmer who I am told has twice tried to enlist and was turned down for eyes but the other 'shirkers' stand; one to one: I thought and thought about my fatal phrase which did not sound quite right on the phone and yet was familiar: : what I said was 'I'd rather be cut than shot for a cause I don't believe in'- " He imagines how good it would be when the fighting is over "dividon and pain". "But I am anxious for things are not going well at Verdun the Germans may take it by instalemnts within five or six weeks and then if they burst through between Soissons and my old fear Berry au Bac . hardly anything will escape the pincers same model as use against the Russians. The one chance is that they have worn themselves out by dint of victory." An obituary states: "He served in the French army and during the war was section officer to the British Ministry of Munitions. In addition to economic works Mr. George turned out many novels which had a wide demand. " [Printed heading] Ministry of Munitions of War, Whitehill Place, SW, 4 June 1916. unknown

1840114424A Paris: chez Basset rue St Jacques 64. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1840. Unknown. Softcover. Hand coloured engraving. Image VG - blank margins have a some faults. NO date but possibly between around 1840 and given the 'Dembour et Gangel' note on the print see later likely a later impression of a late 18th Century print . Additional printed caption "VUE DU CHATEAU DE St CLOUD PRES DE PARIS" inverted mirror image on the upper margin. Paper very lightly marked and quite creased and 'rolled' to the edges with quite a lot of closed tears - no loss neatly repaired with archive tape to the reverse to those broad blank margins otherwise a very good engraving. This interesting prospective view most likely prepared for a 'peep box'. "Vue Optique" Vue d'Optique or perspective view/optical view refers to a genre of etching popular during the second half of the 18th century and well into the 19th. Such 'Vues' were specifically developed to provide the illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope also known as an "optical diagonal machine" or viewers with similar functions. Optical viewers were generally popular with well-to-do European families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This print has the Publisher as 'A Paris chez Basset rue St Jacques 64' at the left hand side of the print under the main Title and "Dembour et Gangel editeurs a Metz Moselle. Depose" on the right hand side under the main Title. Other than those mentioned above there are no other publication details or text on this print. Paul Andre Basset was a Paris print publisher printseller wallpaper manufacturer and the son of André Basset. He married in 1787 and was very active during the revolutionary period. He was situated in Paris at rue Saint Jacques no.64 where his firm remained until at least 1885. Dembour and Gangel were also Publishers and Printer manufacturers. Associated from 1840 to 1852. The Image alone without the broad borders measures 15.25" x 9. 85 " 38. 7 cm x 25 cm . See Images ; Oblong Folio 13" - 23" tall . chez Basset, rue St Jacques 64, paperback
1800114423A Paris: chez Basset rue St Jacques 64. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1800. Unknown. Softcover. Hand coloured engraving. Image VG - blank margins have a some faults. NO date but possibly between 1780/1840 likely a later impression of a late 18th Century print . Light printing impression surrounding the print. 'Sarasin P.' on the left hand side the Artist under the image and 'la chaussee Sculp' on the right hand side. Additional printed caption "VUE DES CÔTES D'ECOSSE" inverted mirror image on the upper margin. Paper very lightly marked and quite creased and 'rolled' to the edges with some closed tears - no loss neatly repaired with archive tape to the reverse to those broad blank margins otherwise a very good engraving. This interesting view of the coast prepared for a 'peep box' represents a mountainous and stormy sea shore in apparently Scotland. A small village is shown on the shore and near the top of the mountain with fishing boats and nets in the sea. "Vue Optique or perspective view refers to a genre of etching popular during the second half of the 18th century and into the 19th. Such 'Vues' were specifically developed to provide the illusion of depth when viewed through a zograscope also known as an "optical diagonal machine" or viewers with similar functions. Optical viewers were generally popular with well-to-do European families in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. What makes this particular image even more interesting is that I have found for sale by another dealer an ALMOST identical view BUT entitled 'Vue des Côtes de SIBERIE' View of the Coasts of Siberia there are some differences but the basic layout is the same but that print was published in Paris by Laurent Pierre La Chaussée but also undated. I am unable to ascertain the chronology of these two prints and whether one might be a 'pirated' version . THIS print has the Publisher as 'A Paris chez Basset rue St Jacques 64' at the left hand side by the outer bottom print impression line. Other than those mentioned above there are no other publication details or text on this print. 1700200060AG1700. Paris Jacques Chereau c.1700s. Original hand-coloured engraved vue d'optique. Plate Size: 39.3 cm x 28.5 cm. Sheet Size: 41.5 cm x 29.7 cm. Original print. In very good condition. Clean crisp and bright impression. A beautifully coloured vue d'optique of 18th Century Paris. A beautiful original hand-coloured copperplate engraving that shows a view of The Paris Observatory and the College des Jesuits on the left bank of the Seine. In the foreground people are shown out strolling and conversing. Below the printed area is the title and the following address of the publisher in French: "A Paris chez J. Chereau rue St. Jacques au dessus de la Fontaine St. Severin aux 2 Colonnes No. 257." Jacques Chéreau 1688 - 1776 was a portrait engraver printmaker and publisher of optical prints in a neighbourhood of printmakers at the Rue Saint-Jacques variously given on prints as "au Grand St. Remy" "au Coq" or "au dessus de la Fontaine St. Severin" in Paris France. From about 1740 to about 1820 optical prints also called "vue optique" or "vue d'optique" prints were made to be viewed through a Zograscope or other devices of convex lens and mirror all of which produced optical illusion of depth. Intaglio optical prints have exaggerated converging lines and bright hand-colours which contribute to the illusion of depth. Typically the legends of optical prints have reversed words along the top edge as those would be seen though the scope but words on the bottom of the prints are normal. Jacques and his brother were considered some of the most prolific publishers of prints in Paris. Subjects include current events views of the known world and fantasy compositions. Wikipedia unknown
