Barthelemy Lauvergne 1805-1871 was a French painter maritime and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C. He accompanied the French naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville 1790-1842 onboard the L'Astrolabe 1826-1829 Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace 1793-1875 on La Favorite 1830-1832 and Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant 1793-1858 on La Bonite 1836-1837. Sigismond Himely 1801-1872 was a mid 19th C. Swiss painter viewmaker acquaint engraver active in Paris known for his excellent aquatints. Louis Auguste de Sainson 1800-1877 was a French artist lithographer and engraver. He worked as a draughtsman on the Astrolabe in its circumnavigation of the globe in 1826-1829 and then spent almost 5 years to create the prints for the publication of its expedition narrative. Chamerovzow Secretary of the Sub-Committee of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society one of the Societies proposing that the 1867 Conference be organized and held. The invitation is short on details. The unnamed recipient of the letter is: 1 requested to advise as to whether they planned to attend the Conference; 2 advised that Mr. Cook presumably Thomas Cook of the well-known firm for travelers can be contacted to secure help with accommodations; and 3 told that delegates might be sought from those already planning to attend the Great Paris Exhibition in 1867. unknown

Engravings drawn by Admiral Paris.</p><p><strong>Gorée</strong> is a tiny island off the Dakar coast known for its role in the 15th - 19th C. Atlantic slave trade.<br /><strong>Signares</strong> were black and mulatto Senegalese women who had an influence via their marriage with European men and their patrimony. These women of color managed to gain some individual assets status and power in the hierarchies of the Atlantic slave trade.</p><p>The circumnavigation by Admiral Paris in the 'Artémis' took place between 1837 and 1840. The engravings from the original drawings after Laplace and others include a wonderful view of Manila a picturesque Honolulu a chillingly grim view of the penal colony at Port Arthur Van Diemen's Land /Tasmania; and the 'Artémis' run aground at Papeete Tahiti; The introductory text by Henricy places each engraving in the context of the route taken by the 'Artémis' which visited Sydney as well as Hobart. A luxurious large paper reissue of the finely engraved illustrations originally published in the Laplace edition of 1841. Forbes writes: "This is a deluxe limited edition evidently assembled with the aid of Edmond Paris who had become a distinguished admiral. Some authorities consider the plates better printed in this edition than in the Laplace text. It has always been a very difficult work to obtain and is found in surprisingly few collections of Pacific voyages". Condition: cleaned large paper wide margins very good condition. This atmospheric image of the fort with a junk and a yacht sailing in the river in the foreground is from the official account of the Laplace voyage in the Favorite 1830-32 by voyage artist François-Edmond Pâris 1806-1893. Owner's name stamp inside each volume. Tiny closed tear in front endpaper of volume 1. Inch-long puncture in spine of volume 2 not affecting the integrity of the binding. Back cover of volume 2 is vertically creased; milder crease in front cover of volume 4. Air bubbles under cloth on volume 3 which also has a small ink drip stain on the spine. Small nick in cloth on edge of volume 4's front cover. A few of the folding maps have closed tears but most are totally intact. Text unmarked and binding tight across the set. Very good condition overall. An important contemporary account of the American Civil War by a prince of the deposed House of Orleans a grandson of Louise Philippe of France. Philippe le Comte de Paris came to the United States to volunteer for the Union Army in 1861 where he served on the staff of General McClellan until July 1862. He later returned to Europe where he was floated as a potential candidate for restoration of the monarchy in France. However he spent much of his later life in exile in the United Kingdom. This four-volume history is complete with numerous folding maps of Civil War battlefields and forts. This edition published across 1875-1888. Porter & Coates hardcover

Ownership copy of Civil War surgeon Dr. James V. Kendall with his signature and address of Baldwinsville NY and the date each volume was purchased on the flyleaf of both volumes. Pasted into the second fly of the Volume I is a two-page ANS on chateau letterhead dated 12.8.85 from le Comte de Paris the author to Dr. Kendall in English in which le Comte acknowledges Kendall's laudatory letter and comments that he "has brought this work to about two thirds completion' anticipating "there will be ten in the French and five in the American edition' and regretting "unfortunately I can devote but little time to this great work". Beneath the pasted note Kendall has written a signed note in which he explains the nature of the correspondence from le Comte. Underneath that in pencil. Kendall notes that the work was never completed. Dr. Kendall 1818-1901 served in the 149th Regiment during the War between the States. Prince Philippe of Orléans Count of Paris Louis Philippe Albert 1838 -1894 was disputedly King of the French from 24 to 26 February 1848 as Louis Philippe II although he was never officially proclaimed as such. He was the grandson of Louis Philippe I King of the French. A historian journalist and outspoken democrat Philippe volunteered to serve as a Union Army officer in the American Civil War along with his younger brother Prince Robert Duke of Chartres. He was appointed as an assistant adjutant general with the rank of captain on 24 September 1861 and served under the name of Philippe d'Orléans the Count of Paris. He served on the staff of the commander of the Army of the Potomac Major General George B. McClellan for nearly a year. He distinguished himself during the unsuccessful Peninsular Campaign. He resigned from the Union Army along with his brother on 15 July 1862. Philippe's History of the Civil War in America is considered a standard reference work on the subject. Source: Wikipedia.
