Monaghan p. 74 no. 1157.The atlas is bound in contemporary full dark blue cloth smooth spine printed title label laid down on the spine gilt device on the upper cover a few scratches to the boards contemporary binding.This remains the finest contemporary work in French on the American Civil War all the more compelling as its author took part in the campaign: grandson of Louis-Philippe the Comte de Paris 1838-1894 enlisted in 1861 in the Federal Army alongside his brother the Duc de Chartres. He saw action at Williamsburg Fair Oaks and Gaines Mill before leaving the United States in 1862 so as not to hinder the French expedition to Mexico.The atlas bears the device of the Cercle de l'Union Artistique stamp on a front free endpaper. Founded in 1860 the society remained active until 1946 cf. Inscribed in the first volume by the author Prince Philippe le Comte de Paris the disputed "King of the French" who ruled for a mere 2 days after his grandfather Louis-Philippe was deposed in 1848. An historian and journalist Philippe joined the Union Army at the outbreak of the American Civil War and rose to Adjutant General under George MacLellan during the first year before leaving for France in 1862. He ended up writing a seven volume history of the Civil War plus an accompanying atlas. This set is only the seven volume text. Green leather spine with marbled boards save volume 7 where the green has faded from the spine and the boards and endpapers differ from the others. Shelfworn. "La Favorite" was one of several ships sent out by the France in the 1820/1830s to compete with similar expeditions by other countries. These were voyages with political/territorial objectives via commercial diplomatic scientific and artistic means intending to expand French influence particularly in Southeast Asia to counter British interests. Barthelemy Lauvergne 1805-1871 was a French painter maritime and landscape artist active in the mid 19th C. He accompanied the French naval officer Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont d'Urville 1790-1842 onboard the L'Astrolabe 1826-1829 Cyrille Pierre Theodore Laplace 1793-1875 on La Favorite 1830-1832 and Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant 1793-1858 on La Bonite 1836-1837. Sigismond Himely 1801-1872 was a mid 19th C. Swiss painter viewmaker acquaint engraver active in Paris known for his excellent aquatints. Louis Auguste de Sainson 1800-1877 was a French artist lithographer and engraver. He worked as a draughtsman on the Astrolabe in its circumnavigation of the globe in 1826-1829 and then spent almost 5 years to create the prints for the publication of its expedition narrative. Attractive little guidebook to Paris and its monuments. Albert-Etienne Montemont was born on August 20 1788 in Rupt-sur-Moselle the son of Jean-Joseph Montemont a forest ranger and Agnes Joly. He did well in his studies at the college in Remiremont and learned German while living with a German family to whom his parents had sent him. In 1805 he joined the administration of combined duties and held various positions until 1815 in Epinal then Valence Gap Italy and again in Gap. A fervent Bonapartist he then chose to devote himself to literature; he spent time in England as a tutor and traveled to various European countries. He wrote translations tourist guides travelogues and poetry. Initiated into Freemasonry during the Empire he joined the revolutionary lodge Les Amis de la Verite in Paris in 1821 but after the Fieschi assassination attempt in 1836 he affiliated himself with the Grande Loge Centrale de Paris. He was behind the Vosges banquets in Paris in 1818. In 1830 he returned to a civil service position at the Ministry of Finance as head of the office responsible for statistical work. Albert Montemont's application to the Royal Society of Sciences of Nancy was registered on March 15 1821. Caumont was responsible for the report which he made on June 21 1821 after Montemont renewed his application and sent his new work a Voyage en Italie. Subsequently Albert Montemont who was a prolific writer proved to be a very assiduous correspondent: the works he sent are mentioned 28 times in the Table de Favier! He translated all of Walter Scott's works and wrote a 51-volume Histoire universelle des voyages. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor on December 11 1850.
