Mary Berry 1763-1852 grew up in a family of modest fortune yet she knew a great many important people including Princess Caroline of Wales the estranged wife of the Regent their daughter Princess Charlotte and the author Mme. de Stael who described Mary as "by far the cleverest woman in England." Mary met Lord Byron and Napoleon but her greatest friend was Horace Walpole the society wit letter-writer and builder of the neo-gothic extravaganza Strawberry Hill. Walpole who met Berry and her younger sister Agnes when they were in their twenties became so fascinated by their wit and wisdom that he persuaded them to settle with their father near him at "Little Strawberry Hill" which he bequeathed to them in his will. He left them his manuscripts as well and Mary Berry became the editor of his works. She also authored a play and a study of English and French society but our collection of her journal entries and letters put together by Lady Theresa Lewis 1803-65 is Mary Berry's most enduring legacy. The journal begins when Mary at 20 sets out with her father and Agnes for a tour of Holland Switzerland and Italy where she looks at paintings attends plays and records the ups and downs of stagecoach travel. The letters and entries in her journal written until her death give a rare picture of her times and her clever and endearing personality. At the same time some entries are melancholic in which she attributes falling short of achievements commensurate with the level of her abilities and never experiencing marriage and motherhood. Besides charming portraits of the Berry sisters the illustrations in our expanded set depict the authors they read Dryden for example the painters whose works they viewed the many notable figures they met or gossiped about royalty politicians actresses people of fashion and views of the places they visited. Our lovely set was produced by the London bindery of W. T. Morrell established about 1861 as successor to the firm begun by Francis Bedford who in turn had taken over the famous bindery of Charles Lewis. Prideaux in her "Modern Bookbindings" published in 1906 says that Morrell at that time had a very large business that supplied "all the booksellers with bindings designed by his men" bindings that were "remarkable for their variety and merit." It also offers a thorough course for teaching color that incorporates visual tactile and language exercises. <br /> <br />Despite espousing the superiority of art education that did not rely on rote copying exercises Turner accepted the job of producing a new version of White's Course in Art Instruction for the American Book Company in 1891 along with four young art educators--Nathanial Berry Elizabeth Perry Jessie Prince--who referred to themselves as "the syndicate." Bailey was a state agent with influence over art education in Massachusetts where a years-running competition with Prang came to a head when Prang bought out the American Book Company acquiring evidence of Bailey's involvement in the production and coercing a more cooperative climate for Prang's books in MA schools. 181655305Paris: Vente 1816. Fine. Royal wedding edition of this popular pre-Revolution comedy issued on the occasion of the marriage of Princess Marie-Caroline and the Duc de Berry - and from the library of the Duchess herself who famously sold her books after her failed coup in 1832. The Duchess's wedding occurred only a year after the restoration of the royal House of Bourbon in 1815 following Napoleon's final defeat at Waterloo. On that occasion a special performance of Andrieux's 1787 play was performed for the Duchess a devotee of the theater. This rare edition was printed as a memento of that event which was to have massive implications in French history. <br /> <br /> The Duchess's new husband was the king's brother; after the Duc de Berry's assassination in 1820 their son became the heir apparent to the French throne. But when the July Revolution of 1830 deposed the Bourbons the Duchess and her son went into exile. In 1832 however the Duchess of Berry clandestinely returned to France to lead a rebellion becoming "the most wanted woman in France" Samuels. Her coup failed and she was once again exiled; her story would later be dramatized in fiction by Alexandre Dumas as LES LOUVES DE MACHECOUL 1859. <br /> <br /> Realizing she would never return to her beloved library of some 8000 volumes at Chateau Rosny she made the decision to sell it. It was then one of the most famous libraries in France with a tremendous range in philosophy history travel science law theology fiction and theater. This copy's binding and bookplates mark its provenance from the library of the Duchess. It was bound by René Simier 1772-1843 who "had no superior and few rivals during his career" Ramsden 190 with his ticket announcing him as "Binder to the King to Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Berry and to His Royal Highness the Duke of Bordeaux." The binding is in the style the Duchess regularly ordered from Simier featuring her gilt arms on the boards upon a carefully selected full morocco. It further bears the engraved bookplate of Rosny on the unusual pink endpapers. Books from the Duchess's library still appear with some regularity on the market today but rarely with such a close personal connection to the Duchess herself. Contemporary full honey morocco boards stamped in gilt with the arms of the Duchess of Berry bound by René Simier with his ticket "Relieur du Roi de S.A.R. Madame Duchesse de Berry et de S.A.R. Mgr le duc de Bordeaux". Pink glazed endpapers all edges gilt. 4 82 pages. Engraved bookplate of the Bibliothèque de Rosny on front pastedown; bookplates also of Alexis Rouart and Eugène Aubry-Vitet. Presentation copy from the editor Mrs. Berry inscribed "To the Princess Starhemberg from her most attached grateful & affectionate friend The Editor." There is one correction in ink in the margin of p. viii also in her hand. Berry 1763-1852 was the editor of the works of Horace Walpole two dramatic plays and A Comparative View of the Social Life of England and France from the Restoration of Charles II to the French Revolution. "These letters are written with such a neglect of style and often of grammar as may disgust the admirers of well-turned periods and they contain such frequent repetitions of homely tenderness as may shock the sentimental readers of the present days. But they evince the enjoyment of happiness built on such rational foundations and so truly appreciated by its possessors as too seldom occurs in the history of the human heart. They are impressed too with the marks of a cheerful mind a social spirit and every indication of a character prepared as well to enjoy the sunshine as to meet the storms of life" Berry p. xix. 187012823Newnan Ga: October 1 1870. Broadside 7.75 x 9 inches with engraved vignette at center. Old folds moderate foxing and dust-soiling light staining. Short closed tear to bottom edge. Overall very good. A delightful mid-19th-century Georgia railroad broadside advertising changes to the ticketing system for one of the southern rail lines owned by William Byrd Berry. Here rates for travel between Berry's hometown of Newnan and Carrollton or Bowdon are specified and the rates for children under the age of 10 are noted as half price. Further the broadside stipulates baggage is capped at fifty pounds and the excess will be charged "Express rates." The work is signed in type by "W.B. Berry & Co." and dated October 1 1870 in Newnan. The text is enhanced with a striking central vignette of a locomotive pulling several railcars through a mountainous region. William Byrd Berry 1831-1902 was a prominent businessman and landowner born and raised in Newnan Georgia. He served as president of various banks and was involved in a number of railroad interests in the state. As far as we can tell the present broadside is unrecorded. October 1 unknown

Interior unmarked. "Now that the doors have closed to get ready for the big move volunteers and staff have started the Herculean task of cataloging and packing each artifact. During my usual afternoon to volunteer I found this book. It was so interesting that I had to write about it. The book's title is "Freaks of Fashion" with illustrations of the changes in corsets and crinolines from remote periods to the present time. It was printed in London by Ward Lock and Tyler Warwick House Paternoster Row. Looking in the last chapter "the present time" was around 1868. <br /> <br /> The first example of a corset was a description of a primitive man making himself a wide belt to hold his knife quiver and other hunting gear. For security he used laces to tighten the belt so it would stay in place. The last illustration in the book is of two ladies wearing the 1868 fashion of a glove-tight-fitted corset along with a cage undergarment called the Zephyrina jupon. <br /> <br /> As I read through the book and enjoyed the illustrations I realized that women and girls had only a few fashions that didn't have them strapped into some kind of contraption so tightly that some would faint. The corset was made from many types of material. Some were made with heavy cloth such as sailcloth and were laced in the front. Others were made of cloth with bone or metal called stays. Those corsets usually hooked in the front and laced in the back. During the reign of the first Queen Elizabeth corsets were made of metal. One description by a French writer is: "This formidable corset was hardened and stiffened in every imaginable way; it descended in a long hard point and rose stiff and tight to the throat making the wearers look as if they were imprisoned in a close-fitting fortress." <br /> <br /> Crinolines are another undergarment that came in and out of fashion. One style was a round hoop of crinoline that extended out from the waist for over 18 inches and draped downward. This style did not go to the floor. Women could show her ankles! There were crinolines that had hoops spaced down the skirt. Each hoop was larger than the one before. This style helped with the illusion of a very small waist. Other fashions had women and men wearing up to three or four ruffs around their necks which restricted turning their head. There were big ruffs made like a large fan that was worn behind the lady's head. <br /> <br /> This book also has information on jewelry shoes stockings and makeup worn with each fashion. In 1783 Mary Berry 1763-1852 author and friend and editor of Horace Walpole went on the Grand Tour of Europe with her father and sister Agnes and returned there particularly to France many times. Her richly woven Comparative View represents observations gathered in over thirty-five years of travel to France during which she was a keen observer and reporter. While not descriptive of the sights and scenes or the arduousness of the journey Berry's writings are insightful social commentary similar to the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft Helen Maria Williams and Harriet Martineau. Holford C. of London dated Paris Jan. 30 1847 which appears to ask that the attached letter be forwarded to James Holford. Some age toning along edges. Pages are splitting along folds and edges are chipped some text affected with loss of a few letters here and there. Good. <br/><br/> Berry was indebted to Holford; his letter explains his shaky state of affairs. <br/> James Holford's death was announced in the The Chicago Democratic Press in May 1854. A native of London he had been a large holder of Illinois Indiana and Arkansas State bonds when the public credit of those States became impaired. Holford claimed that the citizens of those States were obligated to make restitution to him. He wrote and published several letters upon this subject one of which was addressed to the Illinois Legislature at its 1850 session in which he urged them to apply the lands donated for the Central Railroad to the liquidation of the debt of Holford. He was said to have left behind an immense fortune. unknown books
