19772013Berkeley: Sand Dollar Books 1977. First edition. Softcover. Very good. A nice association copy inscribed on the first blank: "To Gary Nabhan and Karen from Wendell." With Nabhan's ownership stamp in blue at the top of the page. One of 1000 copies a slender chapbook book of about 40 pages presenting as the title notes three memorial poems entitled "Elegy" "Requiem" and "Rising." Nabhan is known in particular for his writing on Indigenous populations and ethnobotany in the Southwest and is a winner of the John Burroughs Medal for nature writing and a MacArthur "Genuis" Grant among many other honors. A new reflective memoir taking stock of his impressive career is due out from Milkweed in 2026. Berry and Nabhan are friends and their work aligns closely around sustainable agriculture food systems land use and more Berry wrote the foreword for Nabhan's book Enduring Seeds. Karen Reichhardt was Nabhan's wife and is a fellow botanist; they co-founded a native seed organization together. Perfect bound in green wraps with a poetic endorsement a blurb in lines from Gary Snyder on the rear wrap. Very good with sunning to spine.
