The first edition was published in 1865. According to the brief "Advrtisement to the Second edition" Lewis had died soon after the first edition was published in 1865 so the task of revision fell to other unnamed individuals. Mary Berry and her younger sister Agnes became great friends of Horace Walpole and lived for many years at Little Strawberry Hill which they inherited after Walpole's death Mary wrote or edited various books the most famous of which was a 2 volume work titled in part "A Comparative View of the Social Life of England and France .". In these essays "Berry defines a restorative creative relationship with the natural world" and "establishes the philosophical ground for a bioregional mode of reinhabiting the earth." Environmental writer Richard Louv argues that “Thomas Berry was the earliest and most important voice to describe the profound importance of the disconnection between humans and the natural world and what that could mean for the future of our species." Very good with slight bumping to spine ends and a few corners and with light pencil underlining and marginal annotations in some of the essays. In a very good minus jacket with fraying and slight loss to spine ends and corners and some minor creasing and short tears to edges.
