179820808London: Printed For T. Cadell Jun and W. Davies 1798. Second edition. Hardcover. Modern quarter morocco and marbled boards. Fine. 56 pages. 21 x 13 cm. With folding copper-engraved plan of the Battle of the Nile also called the Battle of Abu Quir one of Nelson's greatest victories restoring the British presence in the Mediterranean and dooming Napoleon's venture in Egypt. Sir Edward Berry 1768-1831 was captain of the flagship during the battle and when Nelson was wounded prevented him from falling by catching him in his arms. Berry afterwards published the above work anonymously. Berry is said to have been the only officer in the navy of his time except vice-admiral Collingwood who had three medals having commanded a ship in three general actions -- the Nile Trafalgar and St. Domingo. The DNB calls this work "a pamphlet which under the special circumstances of its authorship is of singular interest and value." Clean fresh copy with plan in excellent condition. Printed For T. Cadell, Jun, and W. Davies hardcover books

1974170252Berkeley: Sand Dollar 1974. First edition signed limited issue number 25 of 26 copies signed by the author on the final page and printed on mould-made paper. This copy is from the library of Berry's fellow environmentalist poet William Henry Matchett whose poems were inspired by his home in Hood Canal Washington and who served as president of the Hood Canal Environmental Council. Matchett 1923-2021 eschewed modern technology perhaps taking a leaf from Berry's essay "Why I Am Not Going to Buy a Computer" 1987. Matchett was also a founding member of the Poets' Theatre the editor of Modern Language Quarterly and an emeritus professor at the University of Washington. His ownership inscription on the first leaf is dated December 1974 following publication in Autumn. Drawing from Japanese and Chinese influences this work comprises a series of haiku and the section "Chinese Painting Poems". These are verses written in response to artists such as Ni Zan and Shen Zhou in keeping with the Chinese tradition of seeking the poetry within a painting and the painting within a poem. A trade issue of 350 copies was published simultaneously. Small octavo pp. 22. Original sewn yellow wrappers front cover lettered in red device on rear cover in white fore and bottom edges uncut. A fine copy. Freedman A24a. unknown
73009Sand Dollar Books 1974. First edition first printing. A personal copy of the late poet translator and editor Origin Cid Corman with his full signature on his small bookplate. This book is designed and printed by Clifford Burke at Cranium Press and with only 376 copies. Again an early relationship which would blossom into something deep and rich between both young Jack Shoemaker and Wendell Berry. Berry's contemporary poems look at ancient paintings of the Japanese. Close to fine and bright tall sewn wraps with a tiny blemish to top of spine. A lovely copy. Clean text which is unusual for Cid Corman thus without his marginalia and notes. The book was probably too attractive being Clifford Burke's design. Sand Dollar Books, 1974 paperback
