Exceptionally large and bold "Preston Sawyer / In remembrance / Sophie Braslau" in black fountain pen on a pristine pale blue 6" X 3 3/4" autograph album leaf n.p. n.y. Near fine. A handsome example of this uncommon signature; Braslau died at age 43. This signature was acquired by noted collector Preston Sawyer 1899-1968 California journalist and historical writer in San Francisco in 1930. unknown

On fine stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" seal on the first leaf Brodrick chats with an aristocratic lady about social matters. Reads in part: "We were so sorry to hear of Ld. Cowper's illness & trust he is really better. It must be such an anxiety." Bold and attractive. This came from the collection of Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. On United States Senate letterhead Bulkley sends "a copy of the bill claiming damages for homes destroyed by Civil War soldiers. which is now pending before the Senate Claims Committee." Large bold full signature in blue fountain pen. Also present is the aforementioned printed bill 1p 7½" X 11" Washington DC 1937 January 11. Very good. Bit of minor wear and age toning along bottom edge. "S. 597" 75th Congress 1st Session being "A Bill to repeal the prohibition upon the filing of Civil War claims." Introduced by Tennessee senator Kenneth D. McKellar 1869-1957 this unusual bill sought to repeal a 1915 statute that restricted certain types of Civil War-related damage claims. Whether or not this bill passed the Senate we have not determined. unknown

He was known as a novelist essayist short story writer critic and poet. He wrote both supernatural fiction and some children's literature. Bullett was born in London and educated at Jesus College Cambridge. During World War II he worked for the BBC in London and after the war was a radio broadcaster. Bullett also contributed to the Times Literary Supplement. Politically Bullett described himself as a "liberal socialist" and claimed to detest "prudery Prohibition blood sports central heating and literary tea parties. Bullett was also an anti-fascist describing fascism as "gangsterism on a national scale"; he publicly backed the Republican side during the Spanish Civil War. This volume is in perfect pristine condition unmarked unread tight square and clean. The dust jacket now in Mylar is brittle and cracking along the folds. FINE/GOOD. .
