Notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album as a result the bifolia remain bound together a bit of separation at the top and bottom of the spine soiling to the wrappers still a very good and complete copy. For voice and piano. Plate number 1540. Above the music is printed a note explaining the background of the song; it's about the only daughter of Passaconaway the Chief of the Pennacook tribe who inhabited what is now called Concord New Hampshire. The daughter's husband who is the chief of another tribe gets into a dispute with Passaconaway while the daughter is there visiting. This results in Passaconaway refusing to allow his daughter to go back to her husband. The conclusion of the note reads "At the breaking up of the ice in the Merrimac river in the spring she attempted to make her escape to her husband by paddling her way alone in a canoe and perished in descending the falls of the river. A heartbreaking plea for the freedom of African Americans published in the midst of the American Civil War; the words are taken from Whittier's poem "Song of the Negro Boatmen" first published in the February 1962 issue of The Atlantic Monthly.
