196823892New York: Random House. Good in Near Fine dj. c.1968. 1st Edition unstated. Hardcover. solid clean book but with some unfortunate deterioration possibly due to insect-nibbling to top and bottom edges of both covers exposure of boards at various points; the jacket is nearly flawless with just a bit of fading to the title on the spine. B&W photographs Capote's first venture into musical theatre an adaptation of his own novella about the ladies of a bordello in the French West Indies. First presented on Broadway in 1954 it garnered generally tepid reviews but managed a respectable run of 165 performances. The array of talent involved is kind of mind-boggling: Pearl Bailey Juanita Hall Ray Walston Geoffrey Holder and a young Diahann Carroll in the cast; director Peter Brook; choreography Herbert Ross; scenic design Oliver Messel who won a Tony for it. It was revived off-Broadway in 1968 and didn't fare much better although it did occasion this first publication of its book and lyrics. This is one of those anomalous books for which Random House did not explicitly state "First Printing"; $4.50 printed price on the unclipped jacket. . Random House hardcover books
