Complete with six pages including the cover. Light soiling and wear with a couple of short closed marginal tears. Old tape repair to the spine. Very scarce; at time of listing OCLC reports no copies of this sheet music held by any institution. There are no examples in the trade and no auction records at the Rare Book Hub. Although often credited to Root & Cady or others the original lyrics of this famous Civil War ballad were actually written by a young soldier Lawson Wood while he waited to die in a Union hospital after being mortally wounded during the initial battle at Vicksburg. Root & Cady planned to publish the soldier's far more heartrending lyrics as written under the title "On the Field of Battle Mother" and later explained that a mistake was made "in regard to these words." See "George F. Root" by P. H. Carder and "The Compendium of Every Day Wants" by Luther Minter. This example published by Brainard in Cleveland simultaneously with Root & Cady's Chicago 1862 edition contains the dying soldier's original lyrics. Very scarce; as of 2018 OCLC reports no copies of this sheet music held by any institution. There are no examples in the trade and no auction records at the Rare Book Hub.

S. Williams decries the long custom of a "prevailing inattention and ignorance respecting the proper design and performance of psalmody the most painful and pernicious abuse and perversion in this part of divine worship." An important and explicit endorsement from the pulpit of the contemporary cultural erasure of native American styles of sacred public music with its emphasis on fugues and ornamentation and its replacement with the "smooth academic European harmonies" Nitz of English psalmody this an address by the clergyman Williams endorsing the work of Norfolk Musical Society in bringing the state of church singing in Norfolk County more into line with the proper form for worship. Though the annual meetings of the Norfolk Musical Society all featured sermons though the next of none of those sermons seem to survive; this discourse would seem to be of a piece of the advocacy for this musical reform. For more on this shift in musical practice specifically in the context of the Norfolk Musical Society see Nitz Donald. "The Norfolk Musical Society 1814-1820: An Episode in the History of Choral Music in New England." Journal of Research in Music Education 16 no. 4 1968: 319-28.
