187013609London: Weekes & Co 1870. First Edition. Sewn binding. Very good. Oblong small quarto 10pp. A very good copy in the original printed side-sewn wrappers with two blindstamps from the publisher to the wrappers and a contemporary owner's name at the top of the front wrapper along with a very old pencilled price. Light dust-soilng and foxing to covers gentle wear to spine but a sound intact copy of this fragile publication. Housed in an early 20th century red morocco-backed red cloth slipcase with red cloth chemise with handsome bookplate. Some mild wear to the slipcase; near fine. A scarce rather early ephemeral piece relating to Carroll's great masterwork which includes a few lines written by him. Per the Preface: "The author of the words Carroll has been good enough to add to one of the Poems so that if on no other ground this publication will be valuable inasmuch as it has furnished the charming absurdity about'the Duck and the Dodo The Lizard and the Cat a-swimming in milk round the brim of a Hat."

Williams and Madan note multiple colors of the wrappers and different placements or arrangements of the advertisements with no established priority. The printed cover text in our copy while appearing black to the naked eye is actually mixed with gilt which can be seen in good light particularly with the help of a loupe.

Rare in commerce with just a handful of auction appearances since the early 20th century. Oblong 8vo. 145 x 265 mm. 5 ¾ 10 ½ inches; 120 pp. Contemporary leather spine blue paper covered boards; binding a bit scuffed and soiled paper stock toned brown with age otherwise a very good copy. Together two parts published in two volumes five years apart; rare survival. Doll's two volumes of church music are the earliest German language music books to use type to print the notes. The type font was called four-shape note system. It copied the type created and first used by Little and Smith in The Easy Instructor published in 1801 and was used by John Wyeth without acknowledgement. In addition to introducing this type to the Pennsylvania German tune-book tradition Wyeth was responsible for the development of Southern folk hymnody. E. C. Wolf records that the 1810 edition was reprinted in 1814 and again in 1821; in 1815 a second volume was issued with a similar title but different content." This era marks the beginning of the period of the greatest Jewish immigration to the United States.

The concert was held at Mechanics Hall in Boston in 1882. The featured conductors are Carl Zerrahn and George Henschel. Henschel had become the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra a year earlier. Here he leverages his position to support Jewish refugees.

"Beginning in the 1880s a much larger wave of Jewish immigrants arrived in Boston from the Pale of Settlement in Russia and Eastern Europe. During the nineteenth century the Russian czars had confined Jews to this region and subjected them to religious persecution expulsions and forced military conscription. Passage of the May Laws in the 1880s made matters worse by forbidding Jews from owning or renting land outside of towns or cities and limiting their access to education. From 1881-1883 and again in the early twentieth century Jews were also targeted in violent riots or "pogroms" that left thousand dead and caused many more to flee" Boston College 2018.

The concert program includes pieces by Jewish composers or with Jewish themes including selections from from Mendelssohn's Elijah Handel's Samson and Henschel's "There was an Ancient King" sung by Henschel himself the finest baritone of his day. The performance concludes with Handel's "Hallelujah" chorus performed by the Salem Oratorio Society and the Lynn Choral Union.

The conductor featured in this program Sir Isidor George Henschel 1850-1934 was a German-born Jewish baritone pianist conductor and composer. He became the first conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1881. On his appointment he sent his ideas for an innovative seating chart to his close friend Johannes Brahms who replied in an approving letter of mid-November 1881.

Very rare.
