While the words and music for the song were done by Billy Rose and Ray Henderson it was published and copyrighted by Irving Berlin. At the head of the title is the notation: "Virginia Minstrels No. 14. No copy located outside North Carolina or Virginia. Found at: the University of Virginia William & Mary the Library of Virginia and UNC at Chapel Hill and Duke. The wording and music are not those of the late state song of Virginia the words declaim the longings of an old black oysterman to be back on a scow raking up oysters. There are no references to slavery his employer nor does it contain any "sensitive" or non-p.c. expressions or words. It became a very popular song among Confederate troops in the Civil War.
