197523141No place no date but circa 1975. Jose Contreras's copy with his ownership signature on the front flyleaf and his musical annotations in red pencil throughout. Frank Corsaro's production of Treemonisha with Schuller's orchestration and musical supervision was performed at The Palace Theatre in New York City in December 1975 with Kathleen Battle in the starring role and with Schuller and Contreras conducting. Treemonisha was Joplin's second opera which he tried unsuccessfully to stage during his lifetime and which remained undiscovered for decades after his death until the 1970s when Gunter Schuller resurrected it. It was first performed in a full-scale production directed by Frank Corsaro and conducted by Gunther Schuller who provided the arrangements and the scoring at the Houston Grand Opera in 1975 with a cast that included Carmen Balthrop Betty Allen Curtis Rayam and Willard White. In reviewing the Houston Grand Opera recording Ted Libbey called Treemonisha "a lively mix of ragtime minstrel show vaudeville grand opera Wagner Verdi and Offenbach with lots of dancing a big role for the chorus and arias and ensembles of affecting simplicity and beauty." A program for this production is included. Cover somewhat chipped near top of spine paper darkening at edges otherwise a very good copy. Folio 11 x 14 ¼ inches 173 pages original burgundy cloth. "Henry Tolman January 15 1821 Boston MA-November 20 1888 Cohasset MA had operated his own firm dealing in musical instruments and umbrellas since 1846 and had began publishing in 1849. In the early 1850s he merged with George D. Russell to form Russell & Tolman. One of the most significant music publishers in the United States during the 19th century Russell & Tolman published a great deal of popular music as well as works of noted American composers such as George F. Root. They also sold pianos. After the dissolution of Russell & Tolman in 1862 Tolman took over the catalogue and continued until 1870 as Henry Tolman & Co. He sold his sheet music plates to Root & Cady in 1868. From 1862 to 1868 he was the sole publisher of the Boston Musical Times and in 1865 was elected vice-president of the Board of Music Trade. Russell was joined by his brother Joseph M. Russell in 1863 to form G.D. Russell & Co. a similar publishing and dealing business which also undertook printing work." Hardcover. agency name rubber-stamped on both pastedowns otherwise a nice clean book with minimal shelfwear; jacket browned along spine and a little bit at the edges tiny tears at a couple of corners. Musical play "based on the story of the illiterate girl from Hannibal Missouri who married Leadville Johnny Brown a gangling Irish prospector and discoverer of one of the richest silver mines in Colorado" and her ambition to be accepted by Denver society which leads her to a successful effort to establish herself as a presence in Paris whereupon she heads back to rejoin her husband in Colorado. Unfortunately her return trip is on the Titanic the disastrous sinking of which she survives hence becoming known forevermore as "unsinkable." The original 1960 Broadway production starred Tammy Grimes who won a Tony Award and toured with the play for a couple of years but was supplanted for the 1964 film version by Debbie Reynolds; Harve Presnell as Molly's husband appeared in both the original play and the movie which was pretty much the high point of both his stage and film career although he had a pretty decent late-in-life run as a grizzled character actor. NOTE that in the typical fashion of published musical plays the text of this volume contains the song lyrics but not the music. . G.P. Putnam's Sons hardcover books
