1852WRCLIT66499Paris: Librarie Spéciale de Chant et Magasin de Musique . 1852. Eight of nine volumes bound up in four each volume comprised of twenty continuously paginated but separately printed parts. Small octavos. 19th century quarter calf and marbled boards. Five engraved plates in first volume. Extremities rubbed but sound widely differing paper stocks within each volume result in isolated foxing or tanning associated with a particular number within a volume general title present only in the first volume otherwise very good. A curious and bibliographically elusive serial made up of twenty numbers per volume occasionally ranging from as little as 8- 12pp. per issue possibly issued in wrappers if so not present here or self-wrappers. Only the first volume includes a formal title and date and no explicit dates appear in the remainder - a situation mirrored in the entry in the BN catalogue where the existence of a 9th volume is noted. Only the first volume includes the engraved plates signed "Lesestre." The content consists exclusively of the lyrics to then current songs in the theatres and other performances occasionally presented in their dramatic context with notations of the publishers of the scores and identification of the writers and singers. Representation in OCLC/Worldcat is fragmentary at best. OCLC:460819692. Librarie Spéciale de Chant et Magasin de Musique ... hardcover books

1915WRCAM46826N.p. 1915. Photographic card 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Upper right corner bumped. Lightly foxed. Very good. Illustrated advertisement card showing a photograph of African-American ragtime musician John William "Blind" Boone and his manager John Lange looking quite dapper in trench coats and hats. Boone rests his hand atop a cane while Lange somewhat surreptitiously holds onto his arm for the photo. Boone's left hand is tucked jauntily into a vest pocket. The text below the photograph is reprinted from the KANSAS CITY SUN of Dec. 5 1914. It reads: "The most astute dignified and successful manager of the race and the greatest living musical prodigy who have journeyed together in the Blind Boone Concert Company thirty-five years a record unsurpassed or equalled by any other company white or colored in America. Both are philanthropic generous and kind hearted to such a degree that they are loved by their race throughout the length and breadth of America." Blind Boone was the son of a former slave and a Union Army bugler born at the end of the Civil War. At the age of six a surgeon removed his eyes to relieve pressure on his brain during a fever. Despite this he was a musical prodigy and became one of the great ragtime composers of the era. unknown books

"The quarterly journal Modern Music was first published in New York under the title League of Composers Review from February 1924 through January 1925. In April 1925 the title was changed to Modern Music and publication continued uninterrupted under this name until the fall issue of 1946. The purpose of the journal was to inform American professional musicians and the American and European public about the new idioms and styles of twentieth-century music. According to the editor Minna Lederman 'Modern Music had no fixed editorial position about any composer any movement. Its pages recorded derogatory opinions about as well as homage to even the greatest figures of the age-Schoenberg and Stravinsky who were under its most constant observation.'<br/><br/>The development of American modern music is recorded in detail: topics include the radicalism of Ruggles Ives Varèse and Cowell; the Americanization of the symphony by Sessions William Schuman and Roy Harris; and the innovations of composers such as Carpenter Copland Gruenberg and Bernstein all directly influenced by jazz and popular music. And an extensive series titled "American Composers" consisting of twenty-one biographical sketches with lists of important compositions and a portrait or sketch is featured from 1930 through 1946. Included among others are Louis Gruenberg John Alden Carpenter Charles Ives Roy Harris Aaron Copland Walter Piston and Samuel Barber.<br/><br/>Studies of the many European twentieth-century composers-Schoenberg Bartók Hindemith Stravinsky-fill a large part of the first years of the journal. Paul Stefan discusses Schoenberg's operas; Erwin Stein investigates Schoenberg's inheritance and development of German music; Hugo Leichtentritt examines Schoenberg's tonal and atonal compositions; while Paul Pisk explains Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique. Adjioran Orvos and Kodály discuss Kodály and Bartók's integration of folk music into the traditional European genres. An entire supplement to the May-June 1932 issue is dedicated to Willi Reich's monograph on Berg's Wozzeck. Many articles about Stravinsky's neoclassicism parallel the American premières of a number of his ballets and symphonic works. Reports on the annual festivals held in European centers by the International Society for Contemporary Music and American festivals held at Rochester and the Yadoo artists' colony appear annually." 1974011575NY: Privately published 1974. Private edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Bound musical score as performed on the opening night of February 25 1973 at theSchubert Theatre. Bound musical scores are privately published a project usually undertaken by the music preparation supervisor and then presented to producers and creative principals as a momento or official record of the music as presented opening night. This copy is legendary producer and director Hal Prince's who both produced and directed A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC inscribed to him by Mathilde Pincus and Al Miller whose company was responsible for music supervision: April 12 1974 To Hal Price Another one to add to your collection of 'greats!' Our greatest esteem respect admiration - and love. Sincerely Mathilde and Al." It is also inscribed by composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim: "Wyth lots of Luv - Steve" which wittily Sondheim has written with Swedish grammatical notations this musical being based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night. Typically there are about 12-18 bound musical scores per production. Never commercially sold only for private presentation. This copy especially rare in that along with Sweeny Todd it represents a highpoint in Prince and Sondheims collaboration besides being one of the highpoints in Sondheim's cannon.
