Se c'è un'epoca nella storia della musica che nessuno ha mai esitato a definire aurea, certamente è quella del "grande triumvirato": i sei-sette decenni - dai primi exploit compositivi del giovane Haydn (mentre Mozart già stupiva l'Europa) alla morte di Beethoven nel 1827 - che videro nascere "un'arte nuova". Benché divisi da "caratteri diversissimi e concezioni espressive spesso diametralmente opposte", Haydn, Mozart e Beethoven forgiarono uno stile unitario, duttile ma inconfondibile, in grado di sublimare le "possibilità artistiche dell'epoca", ma anche di consumare come un fuoco "i residui ormai insignificanti delle tradizioni precedenti". Uno stile la cui perfezione ha reclamato, appunto, la definizione di classico. Che cosa ha reso possibile questa prodigiosa sintesi, e che cosa si cela dietro l'incanto che secoli dopo ancora ci pervade all'ascolto? Rosen spezza il circolo vizioso dei modelli analitici astratti, e restituisce "il senso della libertà e della vitalità" di questo stile, tra formularità e arguzia, sperimentalismo e convenzione. Così, la sua interpretazione della "forma sonata" ci fa comprendere come nelle mani di Haydn, Mozart e Beethoven la musica divenga finalmente capace di una drammaturgia senza parole: un teatro di suoni in cui il contrasto fra tensione e stabilità, regolato da stringenti logiche interne, attinge un'inedita potenza emozionale.
