1938List3619New York: Mills Music Inc 1938. Folio sheet music illustrated pictorial wraps. 9 x 12 inches. 6 pp. including cover. Moderate creasing with small edge wear and light surface wear; a bright very good example. A visually striking promotional sheet music cover issued in connection with the Cotton Club revue Cotton Club Parade 1938 featuring large photographic portraits of Bill “Bojangles†Robinson and Cab Calloway wearing top hats against a bold orange background. The design incorporates lively vignette illustrations of musicians and dancers along the lower margin evoking the theatrical energy of Harlem nightclub revues of the late swing era.

The song was written by the prolific Tin Pan Alley team Benny Davis and J. Fred Coots responsible for numerous popular songs of the 1920s and 1930s. The cover notes that the entire production was conceived and staged by Davis and Coots and prominently advertises the show as “featuring Bill Robinson and Cab Calloway†two of the most celebrated African-American entertainers of the period. Robinson already internationally famous for his stair-step tap dancing and film appearances was one of the highest-paid Black performers of the era. Calloway leader of the Cotton Club orchestra during the early 1930s had become one of the most recognizable bandleaders in jazz through his performances and recordings such as “Minnie the Moocher†which popularized the “hi-de-ho†call-and-response style referenced on the cover by the song “Hi-De-Ho Romeo.â€. At the age of five Jazz transitioned to life as a girl with the support of her parents. A year later her parents allowed her to share her incredible journey in her first Barbara Walters interview aired at a time when the public was much less knowledgeable or accepting of the transgender community. This groundbreaking interview was followed over the years by other high-profile interviews a documentary the launch of her YouTube channel a picture book and her own reality TV series—I Am Jazz—making her one of the most recognizable activists for transgender teens children and adults. In her remarkable memoir Jazz reflects on these very public experiences and how they have helped shape the mainstream attitude toward the transgender community. But it hasn’t all been easy. Jazz has faced many challenges bullying discrimination and rejection yet she perseveres as she educates others about her life as a transgender teen. Through it all her family has been beside her on this journey standing together against those who don't understand the true meaning of tolerance and unconditional love. Now Jazz must learn to navigate the physical social and emotional upheavals of adolescence—particularly high school—complicated by the unique challenges of being a transgender teen. Making the journey from girl to woman is never easy—especially when you began your life in a boy’s body. Five 8x10 promotional Jazz drummer photos the 2 Kruppas and 1 Lewis are gelatin silver and the 2 Bellson are halftones all variously inscribed and / or signed. The signature on the Lewis photo is signed in the photos' negative and thus not "live" ink - as are the other four "live ink" autographs in this collection. One of the Louie Bellson photos has "March 18 / '79 at Convocation Hall / Toronto Ont." written in blue ink on the verso. All photos a touch age toned w. only minor wear. 197138867NY: ESP Disk 1971. Tabloid format 8 pp. printed on newsprint illustrated with a Gilbert Shelton character on the front. Paper tanned as would be expected with some loss to the folds and edges small light stain to middle front else a very good example. While we've had a few copies of the 1967 catalog and the more uncommon 'Special Complete Catalog" this one is new to us and were not aware of its existence until it threw itself over our transom. Though it originally existed to release Esperanto-based music starting with the release of Albert Ayler's Spiritual Unity ESP became the most important exponent of the burgeoning free jazz music scene of the time releasing records by such future greats as Sun Ra Frank Wright and Sunny Murray among others. Along with free jazz the label also produced music by Ed Sanders' band the Fugs the Lower East Side folk of the Holy Modal Rounders and the primitive proto-noise of the Godz. While never much of a commercial success for the musicians the label's philosophy of "The artists alone decide what you will hear on their ESP-Disk" led to the creation of a musical output that to this day wields a heavy influence.

ESP Disk unknown

Images are night shots of windows depicting surroundings full of architectural details. Very minimal soiling to lower fore-edge. 1 image with a bit longer exposure time still a very good pair of photos. These two commercial photos of 1920s window displays provide an invaluable historical glimpse into the marketing of men's fashions at the height of the Jazz Age. The photos include unique period elements with breathtaking flower arrangements positioned amongst the displayed clothing. The men's suits range in tints and style primarily including double-breasted and single-breasted suits with trousers carefully draped over surrounding decorative tables and stands cravats at the neck and each with a dapper cane displayed above it. Rich draperies of men's suit fabrics have been arranged below and around the displays. 1924List3678New York City: Clarence Williams 1924. Folio measuring 12 x 9 inches 5 pp. With an attractive period style illustration by Sydney Leff with his printed signature in the lower right corner. Fine condition. A very scarce surviving example of the sheet music for "Cakewalking Babies from Home" a cornerstone early jazz-blues composition issued through Clarence Williams’s publishing enterprise at the moment when New Orleans–derived ensemble practice was reshaping American popular music. Written by Williams with Chris Smith and Henry Troy the piece bridges late ragtime syncopation and emerging small-group jazz textures. Though widely disseminated through performance and recording it appears to have circulated only sparingly as domestic sheet music.

The song achieved lasting fame through the celebrated 1924 New York recording sessions by the Clarence Williams Blue Five Okeh 8256 featuring Eva Taylor vocal Louis Armstrong cornet Sidney Bechet soprano saxophone Clarence Williams piano and Buddy Christian banjo; a landmark early small-ensemble performance often cited for its dynamic Armstrong–Bechet interplay and its role in defining early jazz ensemble language.12 Circulating widely among classic blues singers vaudeville performers and musicians within Williams’s publishing network and the TOBA circuit the composition reflects the porous boundary between theatrical blues dance music and emerging jazz repertory in mid-1920s Harlem and Chicago. As noted in Smithsonian jazz educational materials “the roots of jazz are heard clearly… in ‘Cake Walking Babies from Home’â€.3

Despite its well-documented performance and recording history institutional holdings of the sheet music itself appear extremely limited. We locate a single copy at the Stanley King Jazz Collection at Oberlin with none presently recorded in OCLC.

1 Brian Rust Jazz records 1897–1942 Arlington House Publishers 1978.
2 Tom Lord Jazz Discography Lord Music Reference Inc. 1992.
3 “Act 3. 1950223221950. Complete 1950 run of Jazz Journal Vol. 3 Nos. 1-12. London: L. M. Publications 1950. Complete run of the 1950 volume. Twelve issues with each issue around 20 pages. Black-and-white photo illustrations throughout. Printed paper wraps. Founded in 1948 by editor Sinclair Traill Jazz Journal became a critical platform for serious jazz criticism in Britain at a time when the country began appreciating the impact of African American musical innovation. This volume features twelve monthly issues each spotlighting legendary musicians in deeply reverent portraits: Louis Armstrong Baby Dodds Coleman Hawkins Fats Waller Earl Hines and others. The December cover has a Christmas theme.

This archive is a window into Britain's postwar jazz awakening. The articles range from retrospectives to musicology and artist discographies. Floyd Levin's "The American Jazz Scene" captures the transatlantic tone of the journal mourning the death of Buster Wilson and lauding figures like Sidney Anderson and Kid Ory as vanguards of "authentic" jazz-framed as endangered in a postwar America increasingly seduced by commercialism. Meanwhile Derrick Stewart-Baxter's "Preachin' the Blues" traces rural-to-urban migration patterns in blues development analyzing Sleepy John Estes' discography and folk influences. The December issue features a full-page bibliophilic essay "A Case for Books" reviewing A Treasury of the Blues by W. C. Handy whom it names "the composer of the classic Memphis Blues and Joe Turner Blues" emphasizing the book's role in preserving "the true and historical survey of the blues." Taken together the essays discographies and image curation construct a coherent theory of jazz not only as music but as cultural heritage. Moderate and consistent soiling and creasing to wrappers; binding intact but some covers remain delicate. Occasional chipping at spine. Covers remain vivid with strong photographic contrasts. Overall good condition. A complete year's run of one of the earliest and most influential British jazz journals with signatures from leading musicians of the era such as Armstrong Dodds and Hawkins. unknown
