Timido figlio di un dentista affermato dell'Illinois, Miles - che fin da giovanissimo mostra una forte predisposizione per la tromba - si sposa a diciotto anni, si trasferisce a New York, frequenta la Juilliard e suona nella band di Charlie Parker. Ma Miles è determinato a non cedere alla frustrazione del confronto con la genialità spavalda di Parker: non gli basta seguire, vuole trovare il proprio stile. È l'atto di nascita del mito, che, come tutti i miti, conosce luci sfolgoranti di stelle e passaggi bui, disperati. Senza venire meno alla norma che si è dato, Szwed tratteggia una vita fuori controllo, in cui la precoce resa dei conti con l'abuso di droga e alcol trascende la vicenda biografica personale per diventare una riflessione sul gorgo che ha risucchiato troppi jazzisti.
