È il giugno del 1997 quando, durante una delle tre tappe del tour di Ornette Coleman a "La villette" di Parigi, uno spettatore particolare e molto attento, si erge dal pubblico e inizia a porre domande al compositore. Quel 23 giugno sarà consacrato a un incontro vis-à-vis tra due delle personalità più singolari ed eclettiche della scena culturale contemporanea: Ornette Coleman e Jacques Derrida. L'intervista, pur nella sua brevità, tocca i temi dell'armolodia, della democrazia, della civiltà e della civilizzazione, della globalizzazione, dell'assenza di leadership, dell'evento e del suo dispiegarsi. Ricostruendo le storie personali dell'uno e dell'altro, dei soprusi subiti da bambini per il colore della propria pelle (Coleman) o per il credo religioso della propria famiglia (Derrida), i due si confrontano sul concetto di lingua materna e di se e quanto questa influenzi il modo stesso di pensare, perché del resto, si sa, "prima di essere musica, la musica era soltanto parola".
