The photograph shows them on a tennis court in Los Angeles wearing tennis whites with Mr. Arlen without a shirt and Mr. Gershwin smoking a pipe. This photo was originally from Ira Gershwinâ€™s personal collection. On the verso in pencil in an unknown hand â€œGeorge Gershwin & Harold Arlen.â€ Fine. George Gershwin 1898 - 1937 is one of the most celebrated American composers having created such classics as Rhapsody in Blue 1924 An American in Paris 1928 and the opera Porgy and Bess 1935. He worked in Hollywood and composing music for Girl Crazy 1932 Flying Devils 1933 The Great Ziegfeld 1936 Shall We Dance 1937 and more. Harold Arlen 1905 - 1986 grew up in a musically talented family and as the son of a cantor also sang in his fatherâ€™s synagogue then turned his sights toward a more popular medium and joined a jazz trio and followed the vaudeville circuit honing his gifts. In 1927 his songwriting career took off with the classic Broadway tune â€˜Get Happyâ€™ from the â€˜9:15 Revue.â€™ His Broadway musicals include such hits as St. Louis Woman Vanities and House of Flowers. His many popular songs include â€˜Stormy Weatherâ€™ â€˜Itâ€™s Only a Paper Moonâ€™ â€˜I Love a Paradeâ€™ â€˜That Old Black Magicâ€™ â€˜Blues In the Nightâ€™ and â€˜One for My Baby and One More for the Roadâ€™. In 1939 Arlen won an Oscar for Best Song for the classic song sung by Judy Garland â€˜Over the Rainbowâ€™ in the film The Wizard of Oz for which he also contributed â€˜Ding Dong the Witch Is Deadâ€™ â€˜Follow the Yellow Brick Roadâ€™ â€˜If I Only Had a Brainâ€™ etc. He also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Song for â€˜Now I Knowâ€™ in the film Up In Arms with Danny Kaye Dinah Shore Constance Dowling and Dana Andrews. 6 3/4â€ x 4 7/8â€ unknown books

A remarkable copy of this important work inscribed by Todd Duncan the first singer to play the role of Porgy. Signed and inscibed on the title verso opposite the Index of Scenes "To --- / Best wish from 'Porgy' 1935 / Todd Duncan 1989." The Theatre Guild presents Porgy and Bess. Libretto by Du Bose Heyward Lyrics by Du Bose Heyward and Ira Gershwin Settings by Sergei Soudeikine Orchestra Conductor Alexander Smallens Production Directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Piano-vocal score. Small folio. Original publisher's printed grey wrappers with black cloth spine. 4ff. photographic portrait; r. title v. woodcut illustration of donkey pulling a man in a cart; r. Index of Scenes v. Story of Porgy and Bess v. dedication 559 music i blank pp. Title without price and the word "negro" printed uncapitalized in the fourth line of the Story of Porgy and Bess. Covers worn but still a good copy with a remarkable dedication. First Edition second issue released with the song index but without the capitalization of "Negro" in the fourth line of the story corrected by the time of the Limited Edition within a month of the first publication. Fuld p. 539. In fine condition original grey wrappers a little worn.Â Porgy and Bess a folk opera in three acts was first performed at the Colonial Theater in Boston on September 30th 1935. It opened in New York at the Alvin Theater on October 10th of that same year. The work includes a number of Gershwin's best-known and loved tunes including Summertime I Got Plenty o' Nuttin It Ain't Necessarily So and A Woman Is a Sometime Thing. Duncan was the first black member of the New York City Opera where he first appeared as Tonio in 1935. Also active in musical theater his performance in Weill's "Lost in the Stars" 1949-50 won him the Donalson and New York Drama Critics Award in 1950. Title vb; Cast vb; Synopsis vb; Musical Program; 5 - 198.Â This copy has been inscribed by Gershwin with an AMQS on the title page to his lifelong friend George Pallay: "For George Pallay â€“ bar of music / from / George Gershwin / July 6 1932." Nicely bound in modern grey cloth with title to spine original front wrapper bound in rear wrapper lacking and with edge tearsÂ repaired and filled onÂ this page and the followingÂ otherwise very clean internally and in fine condition overall. Fuld p. 654 indicating that the present score was published on April 29 1932.Â An excellent association copy.Â "Of The I Sing" opened in New York City on Dec. 26 1931 and ran for 441 performances receiving critical and box office success. Brooks Atkinson's original review in the New York Times called it "a taut and lethal satire. funnier than the government and not nearly so dangerous." In 1932 it became the first musical comedy ever to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Â An original musical comedy in two acts with the book by George S. Pallay was a bit of a shady character. It was said that he had Mafia connections. A stock promoter and investor who had changed his name from Abramson he was often part of George's entourage someone who arranged the tickets knew the right bootleggers. He was the friend who would get the girl for George and then get rid of the girl for George. Pallay was singularly devoted to George and no one had been more vigilant during the final days. Pallay had played a Â key role at the hospital during Gershwin's brain surgery having been stationed at a desk just outside the operating theater along with George's agent Arthur Lyons. As the operation progressed the doctors would tell Pallay what was happening and then he would relay the latest update by telephone to the four family members â€“ Lee and Ira and Lee's sister Emily Paley and her husband Lou who had just arrived â€“ waiting on another floor. At first the news seemed good and Pallay informed the family that a cyst the size of a grapefruit had been discovered and excised. This seemed to be good news and the doctors were momentarily optimistic. The news was relayed to the family. Then the surgeons discovered that in fact there remained an embedded tumor. At this point George's brain was swelling uncontrollably. The outlook was grim. This terrible update was relayed by Pallay to the family."
