Il pense être bientôt mis en sursis comme rédacteur au Cri de France. Cependant, comme il est maintenant marié, il explique devoir penser au futur et demande s'il peut "entrer chez vous" en tant que pianiste. Dimensions : 12.5 x 17 cm. 2 pages. Gustave Cloëz est un chef d'orchestre français qui a été particulièrement actif à l'Opéra-Comique à Paris au milieu du XXᵉ siècle, et a fait un grand nombre d'enregistrements, accompagnant souvent les grands chanteurs de l'époque. Softcover bound in light grayish white wraps with a black & gray toned Art Deco illustration of Salome by Elmer Jacobs illustrating the front cover. The corners are slightly bumped and the edges of the covers are very slightly darkened. 43 unnumbered pages with the title page illustration of Salome by Elmer Jacobs and profuse illustrated ads throughout. Very good.</p><p>The program for "Salome" appears on page 21 followed by that for "Swan Lake" under the baton of Alexander Smallens with Nana Gollner and Anton Dolin in the principle roles on page 25.</p><p>Marjorie Lawrence was initially scheduled to sing the role of Salome but was not able to appear due to illness. A 5-3/8 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide insert printed in brown on light gold paper announces "Miss Marjorie Lawrence has been forced to cancel her appearance in 'Salome' this evening due to sudden illness. The management was fortunate enough to secure for the role of Salome Mme Rose Pauly who is famous for her interpretation of Richard Strauss heroines".</p><p>The Hungarian dramatic soprano Rose Pauly 1894-1975 studied in Vienna with Rosa Papier-Paumgartner. She appeared in the German premiere of Kata Kabanova in Koln and went on to sing such roles as Sieglinde the Empress and Rachel creating the role of Agave in Egon Wellesz' "Die Bakchantinnen". She won recognition for her role as Marie in "Wozzeck" and title roles in Jenufa and Elektra a role which she would also sing at the Royal Opera House and the Metropolitan Opera.</p><p>The maverick artist and illustrator Elmer Jacobs born 1901 or 1902 was highly influenced by the New Bauhaus and the School of Design in Chicago. A member of the 27 Chicago Designers the Nine Illustrators and the Society of Typographic Arts he was invited to join the staffs at the Art Institute and the Bauhaus in Chicago as well as a residence at Indiana University. His subjects went on to include works on the American West including works created along the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails.</p><p>The music critic for the Chicago Daily Tribune Cecil Smith wrote the following: "Thanks to Dr. Rodzinski's staggering mastery of the score to Miss Pauly's exceptional self-command and equally exceptional operatic gifts and to the high merit of the other principal artists this revival of 'Salome' was absolutely electric. 1902100898<p>Boston Massachusetts May 1 1902. 1902. Fine. - Three lines of music penned on a 5-7/8 inch high by 7-7/8 inch wide watermarked paper. Identified in an unknown and as "Birds of a Feather" at bottom left of the page with the words and date "Modella 1882" penned by Bimboni at top right. The composer has signed and dated the quotation under the last line of music "Oreste Bimboni / Boston Hall / 1 May 1902". Near fine.</p><p>A RARE autograph.</p><p>The conductor and opera composer Oreste Bimboni 1846-1905 was with his nephew Alberto part of a long legacy of Florentine musicians. Both spent an extensive time abroad especially in the United States. As an opera conductor in Florence Oreste worked with some of the most significant singers of his time such as Adelina Patti and Emma Calve. He is first recorded as arriving in the United States in 1896. He moved to California in 1898 where he conducted opera. He moved back to the United States in 1902 after spending some time in Florence and taught at the New England Conservatory for three years before moving back to Europe.</p> Boston, Massachusetts, May 1, 1902.

186633982Eccleston St. S.W. London March 13th 1866. 1866. Good. - Over 39 words penned on a 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide sheet of buff paper with an attached blank leaf. Michael Costa writes to arrange a meeting with the recipient: "On Thursday I am engaged in the morning but if you can come in the afternoon at 1/2 past three o'clock." He then closes with "Hoping your cold is better believe me truly yours" signed "M. Costa". Folded twice horizontally for mailing the letter is slightly soiled. Remnants of gray paper adhering to the right edge of the verso of the blank page would suggest that the letter was once mounted in an album. Good. <p>The Italian-born conductor and composer Michael Costa 1808-1884 studied in Naples with his father at the Real Collegia di Musica and later with Niccolo Antonio Zingarelli. Although most of his works disappeared into obscurity he composed a significant number of operas symphonies and cantatas. After a visit to Birmingham he settled in England. In 1830 working as a conductor at His Majesty's Theatre Costa was able to influence many changes there and subsequently at Covent Garden. He was admired by Meyerbeer and Verdi. Having conducted several orchestras he took on English citizenship and was subsequently knighted in 1869. Among those compositions which survived are his ballets "Kenilworth" "Une Heure a Naples" "Sir Huon" and "Alma". His operas "Malek Adhel" and "Don Carlos" were produced in Paris and London. In his letter Serebrier informs his friend City Center Producer Jean Dalrymple that he has "been invited to conduct a pair of concerts with the American Symphony Orchestra in November 1984." "It will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the World Premiere of the Symphony No.4 by Ives." He goes on to mention that a feature article about him is to appear in "Symphony News" magazine and asks if she could get a copy for him and perhaps interest both U.P. and A.P. to cover it. Thinking of the publicity potential of the article he suggests that Carnegie Hall Magazine or Bravo Magazine might be interested in subsequently reprinting the article. Signed "Jose". Jean Dalrymple has subsequently drawn a line through the text indicating she had read the letter. Folded in half horizontally for mailing. Near fine. <p>Jose Serebrier b. 1938 is an Uruguayan conductor and composer. He first conducted at the age of eleven with his school orchestra which toured the country. He graduated from the Municipal School of Music in Montevideo and subsequently won the National Orchestra's composition contest with his "Legend of Faust". He studied conducting with Eleazar de Carvalho and Aaron Copland at Tanglewood and with Pierre Monteux. His first symphony written at age 17 was conducted by Leopold Stokowski. Thereafter he held many conducting posts and toured widely with a number of orchestras. He was one of the most frequently recorded conductors of his generation.<p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.
