19725379London: Turnstone Press LTD 1972. UK First Edition First Printing. Hardcover leatherette. Russell Munson. An uncommon find – A First Edition First 1972 Printing so stated of the UK edition of Richard Bach’s “Jonathan Livingston Seagull.†This edition’s book comes in leatherette light blue panels with silver stamped lettering on the spine. Book clean throughout tightly bound and sharp cornered. The spine is unmarred and without wrinkling. Very minor toning common with clean front and back pastedowns. A gorgeous copy. Accompanied by a complete dust jacket not price clipped as we have often noticed for these UK edition dust jackets. Dust jacket has a ¾th inch closed tear to the back cover upper left. Minor edge wear and chipping to the head and foot of the dust jacket spine though the dust jacket spine itself is clean without sunning or wrinkling. The UK dust jacket for this title is a bit busier than its US counterpart. Included is the price £1.50 Ray Bradbury’s review of the book along with 9 separate paragraphs for additional Turnstone Press Ltd. Publications including works by Marion Campbell Gopi Krishna John Philip Cohane Psychics Magazine Peter Richelieu Cyrus H. Gordon Herbert B. Greenhouse and P. D. Ouspensky. The inner front cover flap includes a long introduction of “Johnathan Livingston Seagull†by the publisher. The dust jacket’s pictorial back cover features Ernest K. Gann’s review of the book where Gann compares the story to St. Expurey’s “The Little Prince.â€

“Jonathan Livingston Seagull†suffered many rejections prior to publication after which it became Bach’s most famous title and an enduring classic selling millions of copies. Rumor has it that both Bach and Bradbury were in a book group at the time of “Jonathan Livingston Seagull’s†publication which Bradbury endorsed stating: “Richard Bach with this book does two things. He gives me flight. He makes me young. For both I am deeply grateful.†Soon after Bach’s success a member from the book group decided to playfully spoof “Jonathan Livingston Seagull†with a short satire story titled “Ludwig Von Wolfgang Vulture†which Bradbury also endorsed: “Dolph Sharp with this book does three things. He turns a vulture into a mockingbird. He gives a gull a plucking. And he tickles us with the feathers. I’m grateful all over again. Turnstone Press LTD hardcover

40251Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel PN 5089. Becker Carl Ferdinand 1804-1877 editor. Oblong quarto. Full modern vellum. 1f. recto title verso blank 1f. foreword 1f. index 5-211 pp.

With printed signature of the editor Carl Ferdinand Becker 1804-1877 dated 9 December 1831 to foreword.

4-part settings for organ or other keyboard instrument without text.

Werkverzeichnis number in pencil to each chorale.

Minor internal wear. Third edition. Kenney: Riemenschneider Memorial Bach Catalogue 1439. RISM B450.

"Bach's chorale writing is characterized by the 'speaking' quality of the part-writing and the harmonies - meaning that they aim to be a direct interpretation of the text. In its pervasive counterpoint and its expressiveness Bach's harmonic style stands out from that of his contemporaries who preferred plain homophonic textures in their chorales. This simpler approach found in the chorales of such as Graupner or Telemann with movement mostly in minims was well suited to congregational singing but Bach took no account of that in his chorales which are deliberately more artistic rhythmically often more lively written in crotchets and frequently bolder in their harmonies." Christoph Wolff and Walter Emery in Grove Music Online

"Becker was a German organist musicologist music collector and bibliographer. He was educated at the Thomasschule under Johann Gottfried Schicht and also studied with the organists Friedrich Schneider and Johann Andreas Dröbs. He played the violin in the Gewandhaus Orchestra 1820-33 and in the theatre orchestra 1821-4. He was organist at the Peterskirche 1825-37 and later at the Nikolaikirche 1837-54. When the Leipzig Conservatory was founded in 1843 Mendelssohn invited Becker to become its first organ professor. . One of his special interests was J.S. Bach; he was a founder-member of the Bach-Gesellschaft." Alec Hyatt King revised by Peter Krause in Grove Music Online. Breitkopf & Härtel [PN 5089] unknown
