Volumes one and two of three volumes of the third revised and enlarged edition of this work in half calf bindings. Library stamps to the title pages of both volumes. This is Dr J. Chr. Gottlob Schumann's study of Dr H. Gräfe's work on educational reform of German elementary schools with a history of the elementary school. It was intended as a handbook for teachers and school supervisors. Heinrich Gräfe or Graefe 1802-1868 was a headteacher and a professor of the science of education. After reorganizing the schools of Jena he devoted himself to educational reform. He also wrote many textbooks and papers on educational subjects. In half calf bindings. Externally sound though rubbed to the spine and extremities with a loss to the backstrip to Vol I. Front hinges of both volumes are splitting but are holding firm. Internally firmly bound. A pictorial onlay of little dancing girls in gilt frame/gold background and lettered in gilt and navy to the upper cover. Decorative Augner logo in navy blue to the rear cover. VERY clean and tight. 4to 300 x 235 mm 11¾ x 9¼ inches. In the original publisher's blue lettered dust-jacket with the same pictorial dancing girls onlay to the front cover but in a dark blue border this time. The dust-jacket has some slight spotting and small loss to 3 of the 4 corners and to the head/tail of the d/j spine. Some 'invisible' repairs to the reverse of the d/j at these points. Some marking to the rear of the d/j. However the d/j is now in a new protective clear - removable - bookfilm plastic cover and looks VG. Internally badly browned front and rear free plain endpapers offstting with light foxing pale brown spotting showing through on the reverse. The rest of the book from the Title Page to the end is FINE. ALL illustrations by Willebeek Le Mair. 28 pages featuring Schumann's music for children. A single coloured illustration of a young girl dancing on the title page and 12 beautiful small delicately coloured illustrations variously shaped at top of each musical piece. Each illustration shows young girls and the odd boy mostly dancing/playing music. NO date shown but dated from research and presumed a First Edition.
