Da due anni, ormai, Robert Schumann vive nell'isolamento della clinica psichiatrica di Endenich, non vede più l'amata moglie Clara e solo le rare visite concesse dai medici al giovane amico Johannes Brahms allietano pomeriggi tutti identici, trascorsi a compilare elenchi sugli atlanti geografici e affrontare i demoni che insidiano la sua mente malata. A ossessionarlo è un Concerto per violino, che ha composto poco prima del ricovero. Che fine ha fatto? Perché non viene pubblicato? Perché Joseph Joachim, a cui è dedicato, non lo suona? Gli amici lo rassicurano con qualche promessa, con qualche mezza verità. Ma sono solo bugie pietose: non vogliono rovinare la reputazione del compositore con un'opera che non giudicano all'altezza, espressione di una mente già inabissata nella follia. È questa la dolorosa verità? Hanno ragione tutti coloro che, improvvisamente, a partire dal 1850, calano una scure d'indifferenza sulle opere del «genio malato»? Non è di questa opinione Piero De Martini, che, con l'accuratezza di un investigatore, è andato sui luoghi estremi del suo passaggio per riempire i vuoti, nella biografia e nella discografia. Scoprendo così opere messe troppo frettolosamente da parte da critici ed esecutori, di ieri e di oggi, che rappresentano un patrimonio importante e dimenticato di un autore che cercava di percorrere vie nuove senza essere compreso. "L'ultimo capitolo di Schumann" è una biografia che indaga la vita del compositore tedesco per capire meglio la sua opera. Perché mai come nel caso di Schumann la musica è specchio fedele della complessità di una natura geniale e poetica: l'urgenza con la quale si gettava nel comporre; il lacerante dualismo, élévation e ennui, che avvelena l'esistenza e arricchisce l'arte; la forza delle emozioni, l'amore sconfinato per Clara e la sconfinata malinconia; il sentimento di morte che mai lo ha abbandonato, fanno di questo eccezionale artista la quintessenza del Romanticismo in musica.
