Celui qui était resté plus de cinquante ans employé aux écritures dans une maison d'industrie ouvrit, à la fin de sa vie, sa villa de Belleville aux artistes (Eugène Carrière, Paul Gauguin, Auguste Rodin) comme aux critiques (Gustave Geffroy, Gustave Kahn, Roger Marx), de sorte que Camille Mauclair l'avait surnommé "le Mallarmé de Belleville".
