The actress Kitty Carlisle thanks her good friend City Center producer Jean Dalrymple "What a good friend you are! I will follow the prescription to the letter & pray that its sic not too late!!" Signed "Kitty". The card is addressed in her hand on the verso and postmarked from New York on October 8 1985. Fine.</p><p>Inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1999 Kitty Carlisle Hart 1910-2007 was an American stage & screen actress opera singer and television personality. A spokesperson for the arts she served on the New York State Council for the Arts for 20 years. Kitty Carlisle played the leading lady opposite Groucho in the Marx Brothers movie "A Night at the Opera" and regularly appeared on "To Tell the Truth".</p><p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. Rosa Hood's sister Adelaide Fanny was the wife of Herbert F. Gye and letter and reply are written informally. Hood's letter: 3pp. 12mo. She received Mrs Gye's letter that morning 'and the Queen has read it' and is 'quite pleased with your reply'. 'The Queen desired me to assure you that she had never for a moment supposed that you were responsible for the article in the newspaper - only the Queen thought it was better to have the matter mentioned to you - especially as it might be copied into other papers.' The Queen also thinks that Mrs Gye should 'have some contradiction put in the Paper'. Mrs Gye's draft reply: 2pp. 12mo. She writes that she cannot express her relief at the contents of Hood's letter. 'Since your first letter the thought that Her Majesty would be displeased about it has troubled me very much - therefore you can imagine how delighted I am to find the Queen did not imagine I was responsible.' The Opera director and producer tells Jean Dalrymple that he'd "be delighted to hear Jay Willoughby. However I'm off to San Francisco very shortly for Carmen". He asks if Willoughby could contact him when he's back. He goes on to invite Jean to the "second set of performances May 19-22 - featuring the first performance of Dominick Argento's monologue A Water Bird Talk and an incredible chamber opera written in Theresienstadt concentration camp - The Emperor of Atlantis." Signed in full "Ian Strasfogel". Folded for mailing the edges are very faintly darkened. Near fine. <p>The one-act opera "The Emperor of Atlantis or The Disobedience of Death" Der Kaiser von Atlantis oder Die Tod-Verweigerung was composed by Viktor Ullmann and Peter Kien while interned at the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943. It was not allowed to be performed and the script was not finished until the 1970s. The poet Aaron Kramer prepared an English translation which the San Francisco Spring Opera Theater first performed in April 1977 and which had its New York premiere at the New Opera Theatre of the Brooklyn Academy of Music on May 19 1977. The world premiere of Dominic Argento's "A Water Bird Talk" also took place at the Brooklyn Academy of Music that same evening.<p>The opera director and producer Ian Strasfogel born 1940 was the author of several plays screenplays and librettos and of a novel titled "Operaland". Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original business card with autograph dedication as 'Saygilarimla' (With my regards) in Turkish by a pen. 5,5x9 cm. Cihad Baban as Turkish Minister of Culture. Mustafa Cihad Baban was a Turkish journalist, author, and a parliamentary deputy in the 1950s and 1960s. Baban attended Galatasaray High School, Istanbul, and graduated from Istanbul University in 1934. As a journalist, Baban contributed to newspapers including Son Posta, Yeni Sabah, Cumhuriyet, and Tercüman, and he was one of the founders of the Turkish Journalists' Association in 1946. He also wrote a variety of books. Baban was elected in the 1946 general election for the Democratic Party, representing Istanbul. He was re-elected in the 1950 general election and 1954 general election, representing Izmir Province until the 1957 elections, in which he was not elected. He was a member of the constituent assembly which wrote the 1961 Constitution of Turkey, and was Minister of Tourism and Promotion (January to August 1961) in the 1960-1 post-coup government of Cemal Gürsel. In the October 1961 general election he was elected again for the Republican People's Party representing Istanbul, and in the 1965 general election representing Çanakkale. He later served as Minister of Culture in the 1980-3 post-coup government of Bülend Ulusu.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed as 'Lütfullah' sent to Vasfi Riza Zobu. 1 p. In Ottoman script. No letterhead. It starts as 'Aziz agabeyimiz Vasfi bey' [= Our beloved brother]. Dated February 17, 1946. Lütfullah Sururi, one of the first artists who contributed to the current level in the coming opera in Turkey. He is one of the first operetta tenors after Cemal Sahir. They performed many times together with his wife Suzan Lütfullah (the first Turkish and Muslim primadonna). He is one of the founders of the Public Operetta and Süreyya Opera House. He was the director of Istanbul Theaters until his death after his wife's death. He joined the Muhlis's Operette Ensemble (Muhlis Sabahattin Operetta Community) and took on the 'Jeune' roles, he sang tenor songs on the stage for many years. Vasfi Riza Zobu, (1902-1992), was born on December 5, 1902, in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire. He was an actor, known for Tosun Pasha (1939), Karim Beni Aldatirsa (1933) and Milyon Avcilari (1934). He died on November 23, 1992, in Istanbul, Turkey. Extremely rare.

AMQS of four measures from the aria "Si les filles d'Arles sont reines" from Gounod's opera "Mireille" signed by one of the great stars of the English and world opera and concert stages for more than half a century beginning in 1857. He was closely identified with the title role in Mendelssohn's Elijah which he first performed in 1858. Santley whose sister Kate Santley was herself a musical and comedy star wrote four books two of them autobiographical. In 1907 he became the first singer to be knighted.<br><br />Neatly penned in blue ink on a slip printed with a quotation from Shakespeare. Impressive collection of AMQS and inscriptions addressed to the celebrated soprano Delphine Ugalde on both sides of a large album leaf measuring 31.5 x 23.5 cm 12.5 x 9.5 inches. Fine. <br><br />The recto with: eight measures written and signed by the French composer Charles Lecocq from his wildly successful "La fille de Madame Angot" which when premiered in Paris in 1873 was performed for more than 400 nights consecutively. Inscribed to Ugalde and dated 20 May 1873; an unidentified inscription; a heartfelt inscription from Rossini's friend and biographer Alexis Azevedo dated 17 July 1870. <br><br />The verso with: a three-measure 1869 quotation by Fauré celebrated French baritone and composer creator of important roles by Massé Thomas Meyerbeer Verdi and others who has penned a selection from his own Sacred Song for Voice and Piano "Les Rameaux" with a trimmed albumen photograph of him affixed beneath; a heartfelt 1869 inscription by Capoul the great French tenor creator of Offenbach's Vert-Vert and Masse's Paul et Virginie who writes that he is "so happy of your return to us that I embrace you as strongly as I admire you"; an 1870 inscription from Dejazet important French actress who writes that her "voice remains always charming even when it is speaking it is your great heart which sings" and with a trimmed albumen photograph of her affixed beneath; with one additional unidentifed inscription lower left dated 1873. <br><br />Ugalde "studied in Paris with Cinti-Damoreau and made her début in 1848 at the Opéra-Comique as Angèle in Auber's Le domino noir a role created by her teacher. In 1851 she sang at Her Majesty's Theatre London as Delilah in Auber's L'enfant prodigue. In 1858 she sang Leonora Il trovatore at the Paris Opéra and was then engaged at the Théâtre Lyrique. 1886100911<p>November 21 1886. 1886. Good. - Franco Novara's autograph boldly penned on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/2 inch card stock clipped from an album and mounted onto slightly larger card stock. Signed and dated "Franco Novara / 21. Nov. 1886. / New York". Mounted on the verso of the mount is the pianist Madeline Schiller's autograph penned on 3-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide card stock signed "Very Sincerely / Madeline Schiller". There is offsetting to the card signed by Novara and remnants of paper adhere to the right edge of the card bearing Schiller's signature with some offsetting along the left edge of that card. Good.</p><p>The English bass Francis Naish sang under the stage name Francis Novara 1859-1899. He was known for his performance as the devilish Mephistopheles in Gounod's "Faust" which opened on October 22 1883 as the first opera in the Metropolitan Opera's first season.</p><p>The English-born pianist Madeline Schiller 1843-1911 went to Leipzig to study with Ignaz Moscheles making her debut there with Mendolssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1 on January 23 1862. She returned to London to perform there as well as Australia. She married Marcus Elmer Bennett of Boston and moved to the United States in 1873 performing in New York. She returned to Europe for a while after her husband's death mostly in France before returning to New York to perform the premiere of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 where she remained.</p> November 21, 1886.
