br. La nascita del melodramma (1600) è connessa intimamente con lo sviluppo del tragicomico nel teatro europeo. Ma tragicomico è espressione che indica una complessità, non solo di genere, ma di lettura della realtà in rapporto alla scena. Inoltre può offrire semplice alternanza di registro, per un piacere del pubblico sempre più obbligante, ma può essere - ed è spesso, all'alba della modernità - sostanza, cioè ambivalenza, e quindi inquietudine. Il volume cerca di verificare queste dinamiche delicate su numerosi esemplari della librettistica della prima metà del Seicento, concentrandosi fra l'altro sui testi dedicati al mito di Orfeo, ma non solo. Vari gli autori protagonisti del genere che vengono evocati: Rinuccini, Rospigliosi, Vittori, Busenello e altri. Un'appendice di documenti e testi, fra cui il cruciale "Eumelio" gesuitico del 1606, completa il libro.
