"I have been engaged in the construction of toothed gearing all my life and many years ago felt the want of such a book as this. There is no work yet of this particular type published either in England or America none which deals with the subject of toothed gearing from the standpoint of the workshop and drawing-office none which goes over the whole field as this does. Only so much mathematics is introduced as is necessary to establish fundamental principles. But the practical methods of formation of tooth profiles both cycloidal and involute special forms and the employment of Willis's Odontograph have been treated fully. The various screw gears angle wheels worm wheels helical wheels etc. have received full illustration and the essential elements of the practice of machine moulding have been described." - from Preface. Quoting from that tribute: "Dr. Codd single-handedly put the field of database management on a solid scientific footing. The entire relational database industry now worth many billions of dollars a year owes its existence to Ted's original work. The same is true of all relational database research and teaching programs in universities and similar organizations worldwide. Indeed all of us who work in this field owe our careers and livelihoods to Ted's contributions from the late 1960s to the early 1980s." The first page of that tribute feaures a facsimile of Codd's signature which nearly perfectly matches his actual signature in this book. Fine condition in a bright and shiny Near Fine dust jacket. First Printing of the First Edition with complete letter row ABCDEFGHIJ on the copyright page. Bound in the original silver-stamped blue cloth. Complete with dust jacket. From the publisher: "Written by the originator of the relational model this book covers the practical aspects of the design of relational databases. The author defines twelve rules that database management systems need to follow in order to be described as truly relational and then gives the motivation behind these rules. This book is a perfect resource for students and professionals in the field." From Wikipedia: "The relational model RM is an approach to managing data using a structure and language consistent with first-order predicate logic first described in 1969 by English computer scientist Edgar F. Codd where all data are represented in terms of tuples grouped into relations. A database organized in terms of the relational model is a relational database The relational model was developed by Edgar F. Codd Some years after publication of his 1970 model Codd proposed a three-valued logic True False Missing/NULL version of it to deal with missing information and in his The Relational Model for Database Management Version 2 1990 he went a step further with a four-valued logic True False Missing but Applicable Missing but Inapplicable version.". 192243118London W. Nicol 1922. 4to. No wrappers as extracted from "Philosophical Transactions" 1822 - Part II. Pp. 273-270. Clean and fine.

First appearance of a founding paper in the science of alloys."Beyond his work in analytical and pure chemistry Faraday showed himself to be a pioneer in the application of chemistry to problems of technology. In 1818 together with James Stodart a cutler he began a series of experiments on the alloys of steel. Although he was able to produce alloys of superior quality they were not capable of commercial production because they required the use of such rare metals as platinum rhodium and silver. Nevertheless Faraday demonstrated that the increasingly urgent problem of producing higher-grade steel could be attacked by science. The later work on steel of Henry Sorby Henry Bessemer and Robert A. Hadfield was based directly on Faraday's work in the early part of the century."DSB IV p. 531-532. unknown
